Summary

OXMAN is seeking a Graphic Designer to join an all-star interdisciplinary team of deep thinkers and brilliant makers. This person embodies a passion for effective, original, and high-impact visual communication of ideas and information. In addition to the ability to represent scientific systems, the candidate should have experience with the organization of complex datasets as well as with the creation and art direction of editorial and brand design. They should demonstrate an extremely minimal, clean, and precise touch and an ability to develop a signature graphical style that aligns with the OXMAN philosophy.

Successful applicants embody stellar technical skills in their respective field(s), can self-direct, and demonstrate a unique “language” of computing (software) / fabricating (hardware) / growing (wetware), or a combination thereof. They have produced and can present a prolific corpus of digital and/or physical expressions rooted in process-driven design; exemplify a passion for systems-based thinking with a wide range of potential applications for their work; personify an appreciation for science; and seek synergy between biology and technology in research, practice, or their unity. Industry experience combined with the ability to lead research, produce striking work, and maintain intellectual and aesthetic “freshness” is desirable.

Core responsibilities

• Develop the OXMAN visual language and brand identity
• Design graphics for digital and web media, including presentations, technical documents, and the company website
• Actively partner with a multidisciplinary team of professionals, including biologists, engineers, and other designers, across scientific and design pursuits
• Design graphics for physical and print media, including exhibitions and books
• Lead art direction of editorial design and brand campaigns, including social media
• Communicate ideas, work, and progress clearly, including by engaging in team meetings, presentations, and other creative communication outlets
• Create systems, organizational frameworks, and visualizations for large, complex datasets

Qualifications & competencies

• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment
• Excellent project management skills, independence, self-motivation, organizational skills, and attention to detail
• Embodies ethics and integrity in all work with impeccable scientific integrity, respecting both company and broader community policies in all conduct
• Illustration, sketching, 3D modeling, rendering, UI/UX and/or creative coding skills are a plus
• Experience in branding, editorial design, data visualization
• Strong commitment to the team; maintains positive working relationships with diverse people, including internal team and external partners
• Photo editing and/or video editing skills are a plus
• Minimum 3 years of professional experience in a design studio
• Mastery of relevant design tools (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop; Figma)
• Experience in digital and print production and optimizing graphics for multiple channels
• Portfolio of highly successful work from conceptualization to commercialization, demonstrating out-of-the-box thinking and stellar taste in design

NYC Pay Range: $55,000-$90,000

Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other business and organizational needs.
