Purpose
The Field Station Network at UT Austin is seeking a highly skilled and motivated GIS Data Informatics Specialist to lead data acquisition, data management and analysis in support of research efforts after a recent fire at the Stengl Lost Pines Biological Station. The research effort aims to rebuild and update the field station biotic and environmental data that was disrupted by the fire to re-establish the long-term studies. The Data Informatics Specialist will play a vital role in managing and analyzing a variety of environmental and ecological data that will be collected during a one-year research effort.
The Specialist will participate with and support the research teams to collect and manage these data, provide mapping products and implement data sharing for external researcher access. All georeferenced data will be incorporated into ArcGIS databases. The Data Specialist will be responsible for collection of geospatial data from a variety of sources (if available) including a variety of remote-sensing data. Field survey teams will collect biological data and the Data Specialist will be responsible for setting up and implementing acquisition of these field data into ArcGIS. The Data Informatics Specialist will create updated map products to compare burned and unburned areas, and before/after the fire. All data should be collected, compiled and managed according to current UT guidelines and practices applicable to the UT Field Station Network.
Responsibilities

  • Acquire and analyze remote sensed and environmental data from external sources. These include DOQQ high resolution images, historic landcover images, SSURGO soils, fire intensity and topographic data. Explore opportunities for acquisition of LIDAR forest structure, and hyperspectral imagery.
  • Update the field station data management plan to ensure compliance with current UT and international data standards. Include steps for data acquisition, organization for efficient access, and quality control.
Program management
