Pay Range
$103,290 - $139,128 Annually for the SES.1 level
$123,960 - $166,992 Annually for the SES.2 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
We have openings for an Embedded Systems Engineer to develop embedded software and integrate electronic components in the Autonomous Sensors group within the Defense Systems Program. You will work on a multi-disciplinary team to develop embedded edge computing solutions, integrate sensors, and deploy technologies to meet critical mission needs on projects in the Global Security and Engineering Directorates. Occasional travel will be required. These positions are in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.
These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will
- Engage other developers frequently to share relevant knowledge, opinions, and recommendations.
- Participate in the requirements definition, analysis, design, implementation, debugging, testing, and optimization of computer programs on a variety of embedded system components.
- Contribute to design and implementation of improved data visualization and user interface.
- Contribute to the integration of electronics components in a lab environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Provide firmware and software development support using industry standard software development practices and modern programming languages and operating systems.
- Contribute to the fulfillment of technical projects and organizational objectives, functioning as an effective team member on multi-disciplinary teams.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.2 level
- Provide solutions to moderately complex problems involving largely identifiable factors.
- Work independently to define and execute projects tasks under limited direction from senior engineering and scientific staff.
- Contribute to the design and implementation of optimized algorithms for embedded computer architectures.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Experience in implementing machine learning algorithms to solve challenging data analysis problems or experience in solving challenging problems using low Size-Weight-and-Power (SWaP) systems.
- Ability to travel as needed for instrument testing, integration, and operations.
- Experience developing software with C++ or Python within Linux or UNIX environments.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Ability to effectively manage concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities and meet deadlines that are important to project success.
- Fundamental knowledge of embedded systems and hardware interfacing.
Additional qualifications at the SES.2 level
- Strong initiative to work independently and efficiently and prioritize tasks to meet project milestones with minimal guidance.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Broad experience applying effective analytical and problem-solving skills to moderately complex problems.
- Ability to analyze embedded systems, identify system issues and bottlenecks, and optimize code for hardware limited environments.
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience with automated analysis of optical, RF, or acoustic sensor data.
- Computer Networking skills, especially using UDP/TCP communication for message transmission.
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- A basic analog/digital electronics foundation.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
