Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
We have multiple openings for exceptional electrical engineers to work on projects in applied electromagnetics, specifically in the area of pulsed power science and technology. You will participate in the development of one-of-a-kind systems for multiple experimental programs in support of LLNL’s stockpile stewardship mission. You will contribute to the design, instrumentation, and execution of unique experiments employing high power pulsed electrical energy and/or energetic materials (high explosives) to study matter in extreme states. You will have the opportunity to bring your creativity and innovation to bear on some of the most challenging technical problems our nation faces and develop novel engineering practices and approaches to continually improve performance and reliability of existing R&D systems. These positions are in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate and may require travel as part of a program assignment.
These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at a higher level.
You will
- Work cooperatively within a multi-disciplinary team to contribute to the fulfillment of program objectives.
- Perform and document analyses of test results using engineering software tools and communicate findings to senior engineering and scientific staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Design electrical circuits and electromagnetic devices using engineering software, including (but not limited to) SPICE-based circuit solvers and printed circuit board design and layout tools.
- Using well defined guidelines, adhere to the highest standards of personnel safety and facility oversight while participating in the execution of high-value, high-consequence demonstrations and experiments.
- Perform hands-on work in a laboratory setting to test and collect data from electromagnetic devices and components, including high voltage and current pulsed power systems, under general direction and oversight from senior engineering and scientific staff.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.2 level
- Present and disseminate research results at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed publications, in open and classified environments, internal and external to LLNL.
- Perform essential duties under limited direction from senior engineering and scientific staff.
- Provide solutions to problems of moderate complexity that require creative use of established and/or innovative methods.
Qualifications
- Fundamental knowledge of, and experience with, laboratory instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, network analyzers, waveform generators and electrical diagnostics.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate, present, and explain technical information in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Ability to secure and maintain a US DOE Q level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Aptitude for (and interest in) mastering new fields of engineering and physics.
- Fundamental knowledge of, and experience with, engineering software tools (PSPICE or similar, Altium PCB layout tools or similar) and scientific computing languages (Python, MATLAB, Mathematica or similar).
- Ability to travel.
- Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks, projects, and priorities.
Additional qualifications at the SES.2 level
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate and present and explain technical information in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience using computational tools and techniques to design and analyze electromagnetic devices and components (including numerical circuit solvers, finite-element/finite difference codes, method-of-moments codes).
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience using laboratory instrumentation to test and analyze electromagnetic devices and components.
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience in pulse power science and technology.
- Master’s Degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
