Job Description

Summary:


The National Urban League (NUL) seeks a Director, Urban Senior Jobs Program. The Director leads federally and potentially privately-funded workforce grant(s) focused on availing opportunities for or connecting mature workers to meaningful careers. The Director will also be a steward and standard bearer of equity in social justice and its intersection with job accessibility.


Essential Functions:


  • Manage team’s ability to effectively carry out monitoring and compliance responsibilities (funder reports, desk audits, data management, etc.) as well as technical assistance supports (regular site visits, training development, etc.)
  • Engage with other divisions and departments within NUL to ensure strong collaborations, effective program delivery, and sharing best practices.
  • Serve as a thought leader on workforce issues unique and/or inclusive of mature workers, as well as other workforce issues. Attend and represent NUL at national consortium, coalitions, or working groups.
  • Oversee and monitor fiscal and reporting requirements of grants.
  • Ability to manage multiple and complex grants simultaneously.
  • Coordinate with local representatives and Urban League affiliates to establish meaningful placements in relevant industries.
  • Oversee full responsibility of delivering key grant requirements, including managing a team of professionals, interfacing with executive and senior leadership across the Urban League Affiliate Movement, and manage the development and coordination of best practice assessment tools, curriculum, career coaching products and financial literacy curriculum.


In addition, the role requires attention to detail and the highest proficiency in the following core program oversight functions:


Administration

  • Alongside other Vice Presidents, prepares interim and final reports to NUL leadership, funders and partners.
  • Directs the compilation and dissemination of reports on grant operations and helps to socialize grant, initiative and policy impacts and progress throughout the organization and online.

Monitoring

  • Monitors district, state and national data and reports for relevance and applicability for advocacy, engagement and policy impact
  • Visits affiliates, as needed, to assist in effective implementation of, and reporting for, sub-grants.


Education:


  • MPA, MSW or MS in related degree preferred with prior experience in the education or workforce field.


Experience:


  • Track record for producing tangible and durable results creating innovations, working in diverse partnerships and starting up new projects.
  • An understanding of the impact of race, class, culture and language on community development success and a commitment to reducing racial inequality.
  • 5-10 years of work experience in a leadership role, of which a significant amount should be in a non-profit managing federally-funded program(s).
  • Experience developing and monitoring large and complex budgets from inception to implementation.
  • Prior experience in positions leading collaborative entities or projects, leading campaigns and high-profile national initiatives, and driving multi-functional tasks to successful delivery.


Knowledge & Skills:

  • A minimum of 10 years’ professional experience in policy and/or advocacy with experience in policy-related research, development, analysis, writing, and/or program design. Direct experience in the non-profit industry preferred.
  • Self-directed but able to take direction well.
  • Ability to work at a fast pace, juggle multiple projects and thrive under pressure.
  • Flexibility when priorities, timelines, or circumstances change.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and at least one statistical program.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of time.
  • Conversant and passionate about Equity and its intersection with equity, policy and advocacy in the area of national workforce and civil rights.
  • Familiarity with the design and operations of federally-funded workforce development programs.
  • An internal work style that emphasizes the primacy of mission, the sharing of credit, and clear accountability for results.
  • Ability to develop concepts and write federal grants.
  • Exceptional communications skills in public and private settings in presentation and written formats. Ability to understand, create, and modify external communications and publications consistent with NUL’s communications style and voice.
  • Strong ability to listen, learn, motivate and teach.
  • Capacity and desire to thrive in a fast-paced, demanding, and intellectually stimulating professional environment requiring an entrepreneurial spirit and creative approach to strategy development. Programmatic experience and the demonstrated capacity to turn ideas and concepts into strategies and plans followed by managing the execution.
  • A strong appreciation for, understanding of, and commitment to the organization’s mission, vision and values.
  • Experience developing and advocating for federal policy; tact, diplomacy and a demonstrated ability to manage relationships with elected and appointed public officials. Demonstrated strategic skills in the public policy-making arena, i.e., the ability to chart a course to achieve a desired outcome while marshalling the resources necessary to achieve that end.
  • Results-oriented; detail oriented; and comfortable managing data.
  • Resilience and stamina for the task at hand, personal grace in dealing with a broad spectrum of personalities, and good humor in co-leading the day-to-day work of the Division.
  • Attention to detail in both the analysis of data and presentation of results.
