Job Description
Company Description

At AECOM, we’re delivering a better world.

We believe infrastructure creates opportunity for everyone. Whether it’s improving your commute, keeping the lights on, providing access to clean water, or transforming skylines, our work helps people and communities thrive.

Our clients trust us to bring together the best people, ideas, technical expertise, and digital solutions to our work in transportation, buildings, water, the environment, and new energy. We’re one global team – over 50,000 strong – driven by a common purpose to deliver a better world.

The urbanism + Planning group of AECOM is actively seeking a motivated, technical, and highly-talented Urban Planner to join our practice in New York and contribute to our community engagement and planning portfolio of work. As part of the project team, the planner will develop innovative and multi-faceted community engagement and outreach strategies, tools, and materials in support of high-profile design & construction projects throughout the New York City metro area.

AECOM’s Buildings + Places practice includes architecture, interiors, building engineering, workplace strategy, business transformation, asset advisory, economics and development planning, master planning, urban planning, and landscape architecture. With a range of expertise from strategy and design through project realization, we create better outcomes to grow economies, protect natural systems, conserve natural resources, make societies more equitable, and connect and engage people through innovative, sustainable design solutions. Our teams have worked on signature projects such as the London 2012 Olympic Park and Legacy Framework, to the new plan for the LA2028 Olympics, to industrial facilities for GE and Rolls-Royce, to headquarters and workplaces for NASA, Unilever, Sony Music, DirecTV, Box, Inc., and many Fortune 500 companies.

This position is expected to begin in August 2023.

  • Evaluate the adequacy of community facilities and agency assets in meeting current and projected needs.
  • Support discrete project tasks as required.

  • Develop high-quality, user-friendly presentations, exhibition boards, reports, and other deliverables in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and InDesign.
  • Assist with updates and maintenance of internal project SharePoint site and external project website.
  • Work efficiently on 2 to 5 projects at a time under the supervision of a project manager, and prioritize multiple tasks needed to meet deadlines.
  • Write and present formal and technical reports, working papers, and correspondence.
  • Support community and stakeholder engagement activities, including strategic planning and event attendance.
  • Participate in on-site meetings and workshops in a support role.
  • Provide additional support as needed to the larger planning, design, economics, and outreach team, to ensure the smooth execution of projects and the continuity of excellent client and community relationships.
  • Conduct extensive research in specific or general project areas.
  • Support the project team in development and execution of community planning and outreach strategies on multiple concurrent projects.
  • Compile data and conduct research in support of project delivery
  • Communicate effectively with the project team and manager
  • Prepare urban design existing conditions and concept studies.
  • Create innovative and informative graphics for internal and public-facing presentations and workshops.

  • Assist project manager and other team leads on all project tasks ensuring deadlines are met, including project research, GIS analysis, mapping, and coordination, policy and zoning analysis, interdisciplinary coordination, meeting coordination, scheduling, public outreach, noticing, and the detailed preparation of progress drafts, interim and final deliverables.
