This Opportunity
WSP has an immediate need for a Senior Urban Designer & Planner to join the New York, New York Office as part of the WSP National Urban Design Practice.
Our ideal candidate is design-oriented, creative, dynamic and collaborative, able to work with multidisciplinary teams to deliver urban design, land use planning, and placemaking-based projects. You will help us tackle challenging and impactful projects utilizing the full spectrum of urban planning skills and techniques.
Candidates for this position would have between 5-7 years of experience in urban planning, urban design or related fields. A well-qualified applicant will be at ease managing a variety of projects concurrently, leading the design process, report production, and stakeholder engagement on master planning, neighborhood revitalization, resiliency, and comprehensive planning for the sustainable growth of our communities. Project experience in New York Metropolitan Area is preferred.

Your Impact
- Manage multiple complex, concurrent projects, and lead simultaneous community engagement efforts
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Proven design leadership or design management creating urban design concepts (streetscapes, building massing, neighborhood context or connections) graphics, presentations, and planning reports of urban design and master planning projects.
- Interface with clients, sub-consultants, and other professionals as needed during all stages of project development.
- Lead or participate in the preparation of comprehensive plans, downtown revitalization plans, station area plans, transit-oriented development (TOD) studies, and land use code/zoning updates.
- Lead and facilitate public and stakeholder engagement, table facilitation, and community workshops.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Lead or participate in a full range of business development activities including development of project scoping and approaches, preparation of proposals, and presentations at client interviews.
- Be available and able to travel nationally (usually for 2 to 3-day segments)
- Write for, and assembly of project approaches, reports, and other documents.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Proficiency in writing of project approach, design concept description, planning report, technical memorandum documents.
- Degree in urban planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, or related field.
- 5-7 years of professional experience, demonstrating a progression of project responsibility.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to lead and support project presentations, project coordination, and client communications.
- Advanced graphic skills. Proficiency in graphic software, including but not limited to AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite, Rhino and/or SketchUp.
- Advanced knowledge of zoning regulations, urban design principles, building typologies, open space requirements, and other design and planning fundamentals.
- Candidates must provide a link/copy of your design portfolio in the application to be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
- Project experience with transit-oriented development (TOD) planning and design.
- Project experience in the New York Metropolitan Area. New York City project experience is a plus.
- Essential Professional Licensure/Certification. AICP credential preferred.

Expected Salary: $90,000 - $115,000
WSP USA is providing the compensation range and general description of other compensation and benefits that the company in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities in addition to internal equity and geographic location.
