The Director of Product Management is responsible for the commercial success of a product portfolio, overseeing product managers who are responsible for taking products from inception and ideation through design, build, launch, growth, enhancement and eventual sunset. The director of product management ensures the success of the products within his or her portfolio by enabling the product management teams to succeed. He or she provides coaching and direction for the team reporting to him or her and ensures they can operate efficiently and effectively by utilizing and complying with the organization’s processes for product management. This role is responsible for profit and loss (P&L) and budget for the product portfolio within his or her purview.


Main Accountabilities & Responsibilities


  • Coordinate with product development management on the product development process and technical resource allocation
  • Oversee and enforce a consistent, objective process to prioritize and select product enhancements
  • Oversee and provide input into the process for creating, documenting and communicating product roadmaps
  • Ensure that product managers follow a consistent approach to monitor product adoption and use and collect customer feedback
  • Oversee the gathering of competitive intelligence and perform competitive analysis
  • Monitor and report on the performance of the product portfolio over which the role has purview
  • Ensure that product managers verify completion of the product and the readiness of related elements
  • Oversee and provide direction for the creation and presentation of business cases
  • Oversee the process of testing product concepts
  • Ensure that product managers are properly documenting product requirements, user stories and artifacts to support the product development process
  • Oversee activities to ensure that new offerings include the desired capabilities and launch on time and within budget
  • Establish the vision and strategy for the product portfolio for which he or she is responsible and communicate that vision and strategy across the organization
  • Assist in managing and resolving customer escalations as needed
  • Initiate or manage relevant partnerships with upstream partners and customer development partners as needed
  • Coordinate with product marketing for relevant activities and deliverables (e.g. buyer personas, competitive positioning, market requirements, launch plan)
  • Ensure that product managers provide support to sales (e.g. make prospect/customer calls, provide sales enablement content, contribute to internal and external social communities/blogs/portals) and directly participate in sales support as requested
  • Oversee or lead work to create pricing models and facilitate pricing decisions, or work with a central pricing team (if one exists)
  • Encourage customer-focused innovation, and provide guidance and oversight for market and customer research to gather insight and understand user personas and needs


Background & Experience


  • Ten years+ total business experience with minimum five years of product management experience in progressively more challenging roles
  • Related industry experience is desirable
  • Formal experience managing direct reports
  • Previous experience in product development is desirable
  • Formal experience managing a budget


Education


  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Master’s degree preferred
