Who we are looking for:


We are currently searching for a Director of Operations - East for our PVC Pipe & Conduit (PPC) Strategic Business Unit. Reporting to the VP Operations -PPC, this person will have responsibility for key aspects of PPC plants (Binghamton, NY; Fort Mill, SC; Louisville, KY; Tampa, FL; Thomasville, GA), including reaching the production and profitability goals, productivity initiatives, organizational structure, and performance management. They will also have a detailed plan including professional training and diverse operational responsibilities and projects for all manufacturing, quality, engineering, procurement, environmental health and safety and continuous improvement for the production of PVC pipe, conduit and fittings across these five manufacturing facilities in North America.


What you’ll bring:


The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree, lean manufacturing expertise, and 8 years of operations experience, with 3 years as a plant manager or prior success in an equivalent position in extrusion or plastics manufacturing. Experience in PVC pipe manufacturing is a plus.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Working with Plant Managers to direct and manage plant operations for production, maintenance, quality, and shipping and receiving.
  • Working with Finance to understand and implement cost effective systems of control over capital, operating expenditures, manpower, capital asset maintenance and wages and salaries.
  • Complete other projects, initiatives, duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Working with lean leaders to develop business systems knowledge and Lean Manufacturing to include KPI visual reporting and actively participate in Lean Daily Management activities, including GEMBA walks and Kaizen events.
  • Partnering with Environmental Health and Safety to develop competencies and understand compliance with OSHA and environmental regulations.
  • Coordinating plant activities with departmental managers to ensure manufacturing objectives are accomplished in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Spending time with Sales on customer visits, building relationships and understanding the voice of the customer
  • Partnering with Human Resources to enhance leadership skills, including performance management, talent management and employee relations


What you'll do:


  • Possess the skills of a change agent and have demonstrated success in implementing structured operations practices
  • 50% + travel may be required.
  • Strong leadership skills that inspire team confidence and respect while motivating team members in a creative and effective manner.
  • Approachable with excellent problem solving, interpersonal communication and project management skills a must.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of operations experience, and 3 years as a plant manager or prior success in an equivalent position at Atkore International.
  • Proficient computers knowledge (Microsoft Office, etc)
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and competencies.
  • Proven ability to understand P&L and apply that knowledge to affect change.
  • BS/BA degree in engineering / business or related discipline. Master's degree strongly preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of contemporary tools, manufacturing processes and systems, including Lean Manufacturing is critical.
  • Must have experience in managing and working with distributed team members.

  • Demonstrated Project Management experience with ability to articulate improvements and savings to the organization.
  • Must have a desire for achieving excellence in customer satisfaction, process and product quality and reliability.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience of PVC pipe extrusion process desired.
  • Background with manufacturing methods, process improvement programs and procedures required.
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Professional and positive approach, self-motivated, strong in building relationships, team player, dynamic, creative with the ability to work independently.


Within 3 months, you’ll:


  • Provide comprehensive leadership by developing the strategy and directing all aspects of operations at plants in region.
  • Gain an understanding of your team.
  • Complete your Atkore immersion program.
  • Drive best practice standardization across all plants,
  • Ensure standardized and accurate reporting of the TTI dashboard across all plants.
  • Understand how your job will help deliver Atkore’s strategy.


Within 6-months, you’ll:


  • Identify ways to strengthen the team’s commitment to Atkore’s core values of Accountability, Teamwork, Integrity, Respect and Excellence.
  • Building the best organizational structure and managing headcount to optimize conversion cost and productivity across the plants.
  • Assist the VP of Operations and GM in creating an executable and efficient production strategy across the different regions in the country.
  • Ensure SIOP processes are being executed in the plants.
  • Drive lean concepts into all plants.
  • Establishing and refining performance metric goals and objectives.
  • Partner with Safety and HR to investigate and provide corrective measures for on-the-job accidents, injuries, production issues, and HR issues.


Within 12-months, you’ll:


  • Be able to resolve any issues quickly and safely
  • Collaborate with Director of Operations East to drive standardization and best practices across all plants.
  • Grow the skills of plant leadership through mentorship and education.
  • Have meaningful performance conversations with your direct reports.
  • Be managing an efficient team that delivers Atkore’s strategy.
  • Create and update reports, training materials and documentation.
  • Developing leadership and participating in training to accomplish the company goals and objectives.
  • Improve the breadth and depth of lean manufacturing skills and culture in all plants.
