Worker's Compensation Manager, Claims - EAST COAST STATES | 100% Remote Opportunity (working East Coast hours M-F 8am-5pm ET)
General Summary
This position is accountable for the performance, service quality and results of assigned Work Comp Claims area. Establishes program goals and objectives, participates in strategic and budgetary planning; monitors program effectiveness and supervises lower level managerial and supervisory personnel and provides direct oversight on issues exceeding their authority.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Communicates information to staff and assists with interpretation and practical implementation of changes while analyzing the impact on work processes and performance.
- Establishes staffing objectives, selects appropriate candidates and is responsible for the management, development, and motivation of the leaders and their teams.
- Sets and exhibits the standard for appropriate professional behavior and performance.
- Reports to the Vice President of Claims on all financial and operational results and issues.
- Identifies, modifies, and implements change when situations require quick and immediate action to achieve successful results.
- Accurately evaluates program effectiveness and accountability and determines any change needed to improve program. Accurately analyzes program related materials or reports and applies established policies, regulations, standards and legal directives.
- Defines levels of performance for the department and provides regular ongoing feedback on results.
- Evaluates subordinates regularly via internal Claim audits and conducts performance appraisals.
- May be required to travel occasionally.
- Researches legislative/regulatory issues, providing input to government affairs, state agencies, corporate strategic business units, corporate and field claims. Develops and/or facilitates corporate strategies for implementation of new legislation. Responds to regulatory changes by partnering with applicable key management and other resources.
- Plans, coordinates and delegates business objectives that support the company’s mission and financial success. Communicates mission and goals to the staff and builds support for company’s objectives.
- Determines claim staff authority levels for settlement and reserve and maintains the offices highest assigned authorities.
- Reviews adverse legal decisions and determines action. Mediates and negotiates between contending parties.
- Analyzes statistical data and develops the claim office budget. Is accountable for management of the team within the defined budget.
- Accountable for the office compliance with regulatory requirements and claims best practices and business results.
- Fosters inter-departmental collaboration to build relationships throughout the organization to help drive success through partnership.
- Other duties may be assigned.
- Renders final determinations for the assigned claim area for both financial and operational matters. Reporting and consulting with the Vice President of Claims on items with impact over designated authority levels.
- Creates an environment that supports the corporate culture, fosters teamwork, values diversity, and respects all team and company staff-members, internal and external customers, and vendors.
Job Requirements
- Must have a minimum of 5 years of technical claims experience in Worker’s Compensation to include claims investigation, liability determination, reserving, settlement negotiation and litigation management, and regulatory compliance.
- Previous formal presentation experience is required.
- Minimum of 3 years of supervisory or managerial experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration/Management or a related field or equivalent industry experience.
- Must have experience in budget planning and preparation.
- Working knowledge of review methods and audit techniques to analyze data for corrective action planning and recommendations.
- Working knowledge of compensation classifications, rate making and marketing techniques applicable to industrial insurance coverage.
- Working knowledge of principles and practices of workers compensation administration, and statutes, rules, and regulations regarding workers compensation.
- Experience in support function oversight.
Preferred But Not Required
- Insurance designation preferred, i.e. ARM, AIC, CPDM or CPCU designations.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Knowledge of insurance operations and methodologies, awareness of industry trends and changes is preferred.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the requirements listed above.
Work Environment
This role is REMOTE, but only open to candidates currently located in the United States. It requires a suitable space that provides a private and quiet workplace. This role potentially and will routinely use office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, and web conferencing technology as examples.
- EXPECTED WORK HOURS: Schedules are set to accommodate the requirements of the position and the needs of the organization and may be adjusted as needed.
- May work early, late, or occasional weekend hours to accommodate business needs
- Occasional lifting of a maximum of 30lbs.

- This is largely a sedentary role; however, some mobility is required
Salary Range: $100,000 - $122,000
