The Director of Learning and Development (L&D) is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing comprehensive employee training and development programs across an organization. This role reports to the Vice President of L&D.
Key responsibilities of a Director of L&D include:
- Budget Management: Managing the budget for the L&D department, tracking expenses, and ensuring cost-effectiveness.
- Technology Integration: Ensuring the organization can access and effectively utilize digital and technology platforms for learning and development initiatives.
- Program Design: Developing and implementing effective training programs that address identified needs and ensure that they are scalable, cost-effective, and sustainable.
- Team Management: Managing a team of trainers, instructional designers, and support staff, providing guidance, support, and mentorship, and fostering a positive team culture.
- Program Delivery: Overseeing the delivery of training programs, including facilitating train-the-trainer sessions, coaching internal trainers, and conducting training sessions as needed.
- Program Evaluation: Measuring the effectiveness of training programs, gathering feedback from participants, and analyzing data to identify areas for improvement.
- Needs Assessment: Identifying training needs by working with HR teams, managers, and employees across the organization and using various data sources to inform decisions.
- Strategy Development: Developing a strategic vision and roadmap for training and development programs that align with the overall business objectives and support the growth and development of employees.
Qualifications for a Director of L&D position may include:
- Experience working with digital learning platforms and technologies.
- Strong understanding of instructional design methodologies and training delivery techniques.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively present information to various audiences.
- 10+ years of experience in L&D, with 5+ years of experience in a leadership role.
- Bachelor’s degree in education, Human Resources, or a related field. A master's degree is preferred.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret data and develop insights.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
