Job Summary


The DEI Director serves as the strategic lead in programs that promote the integration of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within the research, creative work and innovation ecosystem of the university. We are looking for a responsive diversity, equity, and inclusion subject matter expert in at least one field (e.g., social science and equity outcomes, faculty development, organizational development, training and education). The Director will serve as an educational and institutional leader in promoting DEI-based policies, partnerships, and strategic research and creative work initiatives that align with the university’s vision and mission. The DEI Director will provide leadership and expertise to develop, implement, and achieve the goals of both campus and unit-level DEI Strategic Plans.


As part of the Research Development team, this position will lead RIO’s DEI Research Community, help faculty respond authentically to DEI grant questions and requirements, and monitor the research funding and policy landscape with respect to funding opportunities focused on DEI initiatives, including effectively integrating DEI principles and activities as part of research and creative work proposals. The incumbent will also find opportunities to support institutional transformation and broaden participation in CU Boulder’s research enterprise and innovation ecosystem by developing new partnerships, resources, and tools.


This role will report to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation and will work closely with colleagues in Research Development, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and other campus units to help faculty members advance DEI objectives.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


Research & Innovation Office and Institute DEI Support


  • Maintain professional networks, conduct benchmark studies, and promote inclusive practices.
  • Coordinate resources, training, and other kinds of support for staff on internal work to address equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • Serve as a liaison with campus partners (DEI office, Institutes, and other units) who will work collaboratively across the organization to develop, monitor and report on measurable DEI goals, strategies, and track metrics in alignment with organizational development goals.
  • Serve as the principal advisor to the Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation and Dean of the Institutes on advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Strengthen the Inter-Institute DEI Group by leading monthly meetings and serving as a partner on training, campus surveys, and other initiatives.
  • Develop and coordinate DEI communications in collaboration with the communications team.
  • In collaboration with constituents, design a DEI strategic plan for RIO within the work of a larger, campus DEI strategic plan and manage the implementation, assessment, and ongoing evolution of the plan with RIO leadership.
  • Serve as a DEI resource for RIO, Institute Directors and staff.
  • Create and update RIO DEI websites.
  • Find opportunities to promote and enhance the Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowship for Diversity Program.


DEI Research Development and Faculty Support


  • Support the development of proposals for federal, nonprofit, and corporate funding serving as a DEI resource by helping applicants respond authentically to emerging grant DEI questions and requirements.
  • Assist faculty in incorporating inclusive practices into funding proposals and help implement those practices in awarded grants.
  • Identify DEI-focused funding opportunities for which CU Boulder faculty, researchers and programs may be eligible.
  • Facilitate RIO’s DEI Research Learning Community through the design and delivery of community-serving workshops.
  • Supervise a student intern who is supporting the DEI Research Learning Community.
  • Co-create frameworks and share inclusive practices for DEI statements and plans.
  • Monitor federal agency requirements for DEI statements and other DEI criteria for funding opportunities and help faculty interpret and incorporate these criteria into proposals.
  • In partnership with campus units, research and support pathway grant opportunities.


Broader Impacts Activities


  • Support public-engaged scholarship and BI activities by managing the Broader Impact Network (BIN) and serve as a liaison between RIO and university BI providers and between the university and underrepresented communities and institutions.
  • Advise faculty on the development of BI components of proposals, including opportunities that strive to increase the participation of traditionally underrepresented populations.
  • Identify ways to expand institutional capacity to support broader impact (BI) efforts at CU Boulder.

What We Can Offer


  • Relocation funds are available for eligible candidates.
  • The hiring range for this position is $96,000 - $120,000 annually.

What We Require


  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and six years of leadership experience including three years of leadership experience with diversity, equity, inclusion, or related work in multi-faceted organizations.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will substitute.

  • Experience and ability to make decisions and work with minimal direction.

  • Ability to support DEI programs based on current research and specifically focused on historically marginalized and/or underrepresented groups.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Windows, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.).
  • Demonstrated leadership and facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrated dedication to the mission of diversity, inclusion, and equity and commitment to encouraging a diverse and inclusive culture.
  • Strong data analysis experience, including data manipulation and reporting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and sensitivity to, diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience in program assessment and metrics-based management.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Promote and model a culture of positive engagement and continuous learning, both internally and externally, in efforts to increase awareness and strengthen strategic partnerships.
