Job Description
Who we are

The problem:
Every minute matters in fire response. As climate change amplifies the intensity of wildfires—with longer fire seasons, dryer fuels, and faster winds—new ignitions spread faster and put more communities at risk. Today, most wildfires are detected by bystanders and reported via 911, meaning it can take hours to detect a fire, verify its exact location and size, and dispatch first responders. Fire authorities need a faster way to detect, confirm, and pinpoint fires, so that they can quickly respond—preventing small flare-ups from becoming devastating infernos.

About Pano:
Pano is a venture-backed early-stage climate tech startup that is the leader in wildfire early detection, leveraging the latest advancements in IoT, AI, satellites, and SaaS software to deliver actionable intelligence to customers. Pano leverages mountaintop cameras and satellites to detect the first traces of smoke and put real-time fire images in the hands of asset owners andfirst responders to speed up containment. Pano is already partnering with major utilities, fire authorities, and government agencies in the USA and Australia. Recent media coverage includes being named one of the Top 10 most innovative companies in AI of 2023 by FastCompany and recipient of the Innovative Mobile Service and Application Award at Mobile World Congress through our partnership with T-Mobile.

Pano brings together a diverse team bridging frontline, wildland firefighting experience with best-in-class know-how in operations, logistics, artificial intelligence, and software. Our team is composed of experienced technology professionals from companies such as Apple, Cisco, Nest, and DoorDash. Headquartered in San Francisco with an office and factory in the Mission District, our hybrid team works from locations around the world. Founded in mid-2020, we’ve raised over $30M from leading VC funds.

The Role

We’re looking for a Head of Communication who will report to the CEO and be responsible to develop and execute upon a communications strategy that continues to establish Pano AI as the leader in active wildfire detection and a trailblazer in the new field of climate change adaptation technology. In this role, you’ll work with executive leadership to engage with the media—including journalists, television producers, podcasters, and thought leaders—to enhance Pano AI’s position and reputation with key customer segments. Our ideal candidate will be strategic, creative, tactical, and collaborative.

Key responsibilities

  • Own the communications strategy that will maintain Pano AI’s position as the leader in climate disaster preparedness technology and active wildfire detection. This includes defining several communications “motions” and strategies that are repeatable and can be proven to achieve the business objectives cost-effectively, e.g. awards, trade shows, news moments, social media, etc.
  • Serve as a strategic communications thought partner to the CEO and executive team, providing counsel and key insights that strengthen long-term brand reputation and drive greater, positive awareness
  • Define and lead a comprehensive and cohesive communications strategy and structure, inclusive of all communications disciplines, including both internal and external
  • Establish KPIs and measure and report on communications' contribution to revenue opportunities, including preparation of Board Meeting materials
  • Craft inspiring and empowering narratives that consistently convey the seriousness of the problems we are tackling and the challenges our customers face, positioning our brand as a the leader in our industry, and that reinforce Pano’s mission-focused values
  • Build and maintain relationships with key journalists with an interest in Pano AI and our industry
  • Collaborate with Pano’s sales and outreach teams to identify and cultivate relationships with key “validators” and ensure we have sufficient and appropriate validators in our roster to support key interviews as they arise
  • Lead tactical operations from planning through execution, with ultimate responsibility for narrative, campaigns, media relations, and crisis contingency planning as well as the editorial calendar and supporting tactics including social media, thought leader engagement, executive appearances, press conferences, trade shows, and other public speaking engagements
  • Raise awareness about Pano AI’s network expansion across geographies and customer verticals, to build a “network effect” to accelerate sales growth. Colorado and Australia have both been examples of this strategy at work successfully

Qualifications

  • Natural storytelling talent grounded in an exceptionally clear communication, artful use of language, and expert knowledge of grammar
  • Experience working inside of a PR agency, ideally supporting fast-paced B2B clients
  • 2+ years early/growth-stage start-up experience
  • Exceptional operational skills and a demonstrated ability to drive tactical initiatives to completion, despite changing circumstances and unexpected obstacles
  • Proven track record of media engagement at previous firms and relationships with current, relevant journalists, editors, producers, industry analysts, and thought leaders; ideal candidates will have relationships in the utility and/or government sectors and/or Climate Tech
  • 10+ years of experience in public relations and corporate communications; must have worked within a mission-driven B2B business. Climate Tech experience preferred
  • Belief in Pano AI’s mission, empathy for the stakeholders we serve, a desire to excite our customers, and curiosity and interest in our technology
  • Track record of collaborating and communicating with stakeholders across internal teams and external partners
