Director of Communications
Full-time – Hiring Range: $80,000-$90,000/annual depending on experience

POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Communications is a hands-on position responsible for driving the overall messaging of the organization, its initiatives, and goals to extend the organization’s reach, impact and capacity, and garner greater community support and awareness of affordable housing in our region by developing and executing creative, impactful and successful marketing and communications strategies.
The Director will join a fast-paced organization with ambitious goals. This position will be the driver of effective messaging and marketing to a wide variety of stakeholders, including donors, residents, customers, elected officials and housing developers to inspire behavior and influence opinion through strategic, thoughtful and skilled storytelling, social media and content marketing, media and public relations, graphic design and strategic communications.
Essential duties include but are not limited to:
Strategy and Planning
•Develop an understanding of each San Diego Habitat departments’ primary goals and take a proactive role to support them
•Develop and implement effective communication plans that support the affiliate’s strategic and programmatic objectives, utilizing varied communications channels, including media relations, marketing, public relations, digital strategies, and advertising
Brand Management
•Formulate, implement and measure, the success of an organizational marketing, communications and public relations strategy that enhances the organization’s image and position with relevant stakeholders within San Diego County
•Maintain HFHI brand and affiliate communications standards in the public and digital realms
ReStore Marketing
•In partnership with the ReStore leadership, develop and implement an effective and measurable marketing plan in support of the ReStore strategic goals, to include increasing sales and awareness of the ReStore
•Develop and implement ongoing evaluation of marketing effectiveness; elicit customer and staff feedback to best achieve the ReStore strategic goals
Content and Messaging Formulation/Oversight
•Partner with colleagues in each department to identify messaging and content for use in external communications
•Create and manage correspondence, articles, internal and external publications, press releases, advertising creative, marketing collateral, newsletters, website, and social media content
•Produce scripts, editorials, run of shows for events and other messaging platforms
•Maintain knowledge about the external environment as it relates to housing and philanthropy
Digital Communication
•Lead the generation of online and print content and collateral to engage audience segments that lead to measurable actions
•Maintain affiliate website, including overall brand presentation and timely, relevant content
•Develop and manage social media program and calendar, including organic and paid reach strategies
•Execute digital communications strategy, including e-newsletters and mass email communication to varied constituencies
•Collaborate with Development and ReStore directors to execute sponsor recognition
Public and Media Relations
•Develop strong relationships with media representatives to drive and maximize targeted media coverage opportunities (print, social, TV and radio) to maintain San Diego Habitat’s mission of advancing affordable homeownership front and center in the community
•Pitch and write press releases that advance the organization’s mission, events, and/or position on issues
•Pitch and help draft op-eds and news stories that position San Diego Habitat CEO as thought leader on housing policy
•Manage media inquiries, press release generation and coordination of media pitches and events.
•In collaboration with events manager, develop run of show; supervise logistics of media and messaging at special events, including, but not limited to, Builders Blitz, Veteran Build, Taste of Home, and Women Build
Government Relations and Advocacy
•Partner with President/CEO in developing and cultivating relationships with government and elected officials to further the mission of the affiliate
•Provide support to President/CEO in various leadership positions of affordable housing advocacy organizations
QUALIFICATIONS
•Ability to successfully perform the essential duties of the position
•Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations or related field strongly preferred
•Five+ years of progressive professional experience in Communications, Marketing, and/or Public Relations – nonprofit experience strongly preferred
•Solid experience maximizing social media platforms to effectively raise nonprofit mission awareness and calls to action
•Experience leading media relations, including crafting appropriate messaging, writing press releases, etc.
•Superior writing skills with experience in crafting persuasive and effective communications among a diverse constituency
•Expertise in creating effective, engaging social media, storytelling, advocacy, outreach & strategic communication campaigns
•Working knowledge of non-profit organizations and communications/marketing impact measurement
•Experience with retail marketing to effectively raise awareness and create interest to drive foot traffic, sales and corporate product donations; especially in a thrift store and/or home building/repair store environment a plus
•Experience and/or interest in affordable housing preferred
REQUIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:
•Self-starter with an entrepreneurial and creative approach to problem-solving, and the ability to take advantage of emerging opportunities and trends
•Knowledge and facility with Microsoft Office suite and software applications used in managing a variety of digital channels; conversancy in basic graphic design; WordPress; MailChimp or similar
•Ability to effectively interact with a variety of audiences, including media, civic, community, faith-based, academic, philanthropic, corporate, and government officials
•Ability to effectively represent the affiliate in a professional, poised, and tactful manner
•Ability to efficiently use time and resources to prioritize and manage important issues and projects
•Open and welcoming of people of any faith or no faith, individuals from diverse populations and socio-economic backgrounds, with different experiences, cultures and beliefs
•Experience with ethics of storytelling in a human services context, and use of discretion and confidentiality with respect to Habitat families and donors
•Clearly articulate Habitat for Humanity’s mission and core messaging
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
•Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently
•Ability to speak, understand and write in Spanish a strong plus
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
