ASU Institute for Education Transformation (New Unit based in Los Angeles, CA)
In support of ASU’s charter, a new institute will be established that will facilitate enhanced educational attainment at all levels through the formation of networks focused on accelerating innovation in teaching and learning throughout California. The work underway involves a number of key efforts that will be grounded in deep and wide strategic partnership development, stakeholder engagement, leading and facilitating thematic/action-focused/outcomes-based convenings, discussions and events. Additional areas of work will include research/evaluation & dissemination, as well as policy-focused activities.
A key driver of the work to be achieved by the Institute will be the Institute’s Center for Engagement-Driven Global Education (Center EDGE), which will power strategic partnerships.
Overview of the Director of Communications Position
The position we are seeking to fill will serve an important role within a growing Institute and thus, are interested in candidates who are entrepreneurial, who have a deep interest in establishing new systems, laying foundation for future growth and identifying efficiencies of scale. The position will require a highly skilled professional with ability to manage competing priorities, communicate across a wide array of audiences, demonstrate excellent sensitivity and good judgment, and someone who enjoys contributing to a team. The candidate should have experience maintaining an executive presence, maturity and use of sound judgment.
Under the direction of Institute leadership, the Communications Director set and guide the strategy for all communications, website, and public relations messages and collateral to consistently articulate the Institute’s priorities. The Director will work with ASU Media Relations and Strategic Communications and ASU Brand Strategy and Management to coordinate communications and messaging. The Director of Communications will help to ensure the Institute is viewed and recognized as the leading source, disseminator, and conduit for innovation and transformation in the education ecosystem. The Director of Communications reports to the Deputy Director.

Essential Duties
- Collaborate to create compelling content that aligns with the overall communications strategy.
- Manage the Institute’s strategic presence in preparation for events, conferences and similar efforts to ensure consistency and to advance its leadership.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive multi-channel communications strategy that advances the Institute’s strategic priorities, leading to recognition of the Institute’s efforts and impact.
- Build and nurture relationships with journalists, influencers, and community leaders.
- Collaborate with ASU Media Relations and Strategic Communications to coordinate communications and messaging.
- Develop a consistent brand voice and maintain brand integrity across all platforms.
- Produce and manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all communications materials, including editorial, visual, digital, and print content (e.g. collaterals, website, social media)
- Establish, maintain and grow the Institute’s presence across social media platforms to engage diverse stakeholder audiences using innovative strategies.
- Develop website/social media content calendar.
- Establish the Institute’s website and integrate with the Institute’s Center EDGE to develop a coherent and consistent message.
- Integrate the Institute’s social media presence with its Center EDGE to ensure coherency and consistency across platforms.
- Support the development of budgets, ensure budgetary compliance and reporting.
- Support procurement for all communications-related activities.
- Make use of digital tools to ensure proper data collection, monitoring and reporting.
- Establish data gathering processes/mechanisms, manage and monitor engagement, and use data-driven insights to make informed decisions.
- Support the Institute’s overall project management processes and workflows.
- Manage projects to ensure goals are achieved using digital tools for monitoring and reporting.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Arts Administration, or related field AND eight years experience in planning and implementing a comprehensive communication/marketing program for an organization, including five years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

- Evidence of a nationally-recognized communications professional
- Experience managing communications standards and legal
- Experience establishing systems, workflows and processes to promote quality, efficiencies, data gathering and analysis
- Experience producing content, programming and events for local and national audiences across media platforms (10 years)
- Experience in developing, growing and sustaining demographically diverse audience engagement through the implementation of innovative strategies
- Evidence of a Master’s Degree (Journalism, Communications or similar)
- Experience in implementing a comprehensive communications strategy leading to successful audience engagement, increasing organizational visibility and positive reputation
- Management experience (10 years)
Working Environment
Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse (75%); required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work (10%) Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds (15%) Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
