About the Position
The Director is responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing program operations, people engagement, and financial management for the annual conference Ceres Global, engagement in external global convenings, special anniversary events, and other in-person and virtual events throughout the year. The director is responsible for the overall strategy development, sponsorship for Ceres events and manages a team of five (5) people. The Events & Sponsorship team engages with all Ceres program teams on these efforts and works closely with the Development, Operations, and Communications and Marketing teams. The team coordinates sponsorship for these events through research and internal/external outreach and tracks all sponsorship organization-wide. We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced leader to oversee the events and sponsorship team and provide strategic leadership by implementing and supporting Ceres’ Strategic Organizational Plan.
The position currently reports to the Sr. Advisor to the Chief Program Officer & Executive Vice President.
This role is a full-time position that is remote or may be based in Boston, MA or San Francisco, CA. Candidate must be flexible to work with employees in all US time zones.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in other organizational-wide events and trainings.
  • Serve as budget manager for team and oversee development and management of the Events annual budget, including securing over $1 million in corporate sponsorship revenue annually.
  • Provide leadership in highlighting program priorities and plans; have a detailed understanding and communicate the team’s work, all Ceres’ program work, and Ceres’ Theory of Change and oversee the execution of work. Provide coaching and training to team members and ensure accountability of work production via 15five.
  • Oversee the development of the corporate sponsorship program for all major events for the fiscal year and multi-year planning, balancing immediate needs with longer-term organizational priorities and sponsor relationship development. This includes marketing materials, budget, outreach and stewardship and provide guidance to the team to achieve corporate sponsorship goals.
  • Ensure that key data on programmatic progress and interactions with relevant partners are tracked in Ceres' Salesforce database, in line with the organization's Program-related Data Tracking & Reporting Policy. Provide quarterly narrative updates on progress against program goals for both internal and grant-reporting purposes. This includes conducting the evaluation of events and incorporating findings into future activities.
  • Partner with Communications and Marketing on oversight of event creative, collateral, and communications (from save-the-dates to post-event follow-up), event engagement strategy, invitation build and management, asset development, and other materials.
  • Develop, implement, and manage projects to oversee and achieve DEI and JIE goals, and on a high level know and communicate Ceres’ DEI/JIE goals.
  • Lead strategy development in collaboration with program leads; develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders; develop, implement, and manage projects/campaigns and people, vendors or consultants to achieve goals; lead planning meetings, develop annual work plan, and drive all pre-production needs: timelines, run-of-shows, updating trackers, agenda, rehearsals, updating trackers, drafting memos, documenting progress and ensuring all stakeholders are brought along and aligned.
  • Supervise Events and Sponsorship staff in executing logistical details of events and partner with ceres program teams to develop event content. Lead people and program work, making decisions aligned with Ceres’ mission and strategic plan. Research and recommend venues for Ceres Global and other special events and lead contract negotiations for final approval by the CFO. When necessary, lead equitable interview and selection process, manage and train interns and staff; provide support for professional development of team members, foster inclusive/belonging culture, and manage personnel matters.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 years of professional event management experience demonstrating leadership and progressive growth.
  • Excellent research and problem-solving capabilities and highly developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn specific Ceres’ applications necessary for success: Salesforce, Bloomberg, and others.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to support Ceres’ Commitment to Inclusion and Equity.

  • Sound judgment, a high degree of integrity and professionalism, with an ability to maintain discretion, diplomacy, and courtesy in all contacts.
  • Effective and inclusive collaborator with proven ability to perform all duties while ensuring equity, being diplomatic and flexible and while treating all persons with dignity and respect.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), other database applications, teleconference and webinar systems and standard e-mail computer applications.
  • Strong emotional intelligence, an ability to lead with empathy and inquiry, experience developing trusting relationships with colleagues.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
  • Proven experience managing multi-million-dollar budgets and deadlines with no overages.
  • Strong strategic decision-making, organizational, and time management skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of, or experience with, both environmental and social sustainability issues, particularly understanding of the role of business, the investment community, and/or NGOs.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline or commensurate experience.
  • Successful record of organizing multiple projects, coordinating, and facilitating dialogues with professionals across all levels and operating with flexibility and agility.
Compensation and Benefits
The hiring salary is $113,250 to $120,000 paired with competitive benefits.
