The ACLU seeks a full-time position of Digital Campaigner in the Communications and Marketing of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY.

The ACLU communications department creates, maintains, and expands message narratives to engage our supporters and other target audiences, to help protect and expand civil liberties and civil rights, and illustrate the value and impact of the ACLU’s transformational work. Through our messaging, engagement with newsmakers, our written content, creative branding, and visual identity, we encourage support for the ACLU and help to build a more perfect union.

Reporting to the Associate Director, Affiliate Digital Campaigns, the Digital Campaigner will be a part of a team of campaigners who contribute to the execution of digital campaigns for our national office and our 55 affiliates. They will help optimize our program through leveraging email and text channels and by building out automated flows as part of integrated campaigns using our lifecycle optimizer tool. The Digital Campaigner will work closely with team leads to produce and deploy campaigns that increase the number of ACLU supporters and donors, expand engagement with these audiences, maximize online donations, and support the organization’s policy goals through targeted advocacy efforts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the team in identifying opportunities and developing strategies for high-impact digital engagement and advocacy campaigns through email and text channels as well as opportunities to increase efficiency
  • Provide support, training, and guidance to vendors and colleagues
  • Produce and test online advocacy forms, donation forms, event forms, and other landing pages
  • QA and edit emails, texts, and landing pages to ensure quality
  • Contribute to reporting across our email programs. Coordinate with colleagues to ensure proper targeting and suppression
  • Work cross-departmentally as well as with vendors, consultants and contractors to produce digital campaigns across multiple channels
  • Support weekend email and text campaigns as part of a rotating coverage schedule. This includes off-hours work, as needed, for live coverage of high-priority events or rapid response moments
  • Execute compelling digital campaigns that drive supporters to take action and donate to the ACLU with a special focus on maximizing online fundraising opportunities, including A/B testing
  • Code and test responsive blast and automated flow HTML and CSS emails using email marketing software and texts using our broadcast text and call tool. Set up, QA, and monitor automated lifecycle flows
  • Monitor, respond to, and complete production requests as assigned
  • Contribute to the maintenance of documentation of team processes and workflows for production
  • Help support ACLU affiliates across the country to develop and deploy digital campaigns, and leverage best practices related to email and text outreach. This includes ideating ways to help state affiliates be more self-sufficient and make it easier to consume best practices

In addition to:

  • Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, disability and socio-economic circumstance
  • Commitment to the mission of the ACLU
  • Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned
  • Center principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging in all work, embedding the values in program development, policy application, and organizational practices and processes

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with a range of digital marketing and/or online campaigning tools, tactics and strategies
  • Experience interpreting email, text, and web analytics
  • Basic constituent relationship management (CRM) system, comfort working with audience segmentation, and email marketing platform experience required
  • Demonstrated experience in digital marketing, front-end web development, online campaigning, or related fields
  • Proficient using HTML and CSS to code responsive emails for multiple email clients
  • Deeply collaborative and comfortable thinking about audiences and programs holistically with both short- and long-term objectives in mind

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with creating basic reports, including pivot tables and graphs, in Microsoft Excel or similar
  • Project management experience (including project management software) and exceptional organizational skills
  • Understanding of trends and best practices for communicating via email and SMS text message as well as for coding for accessibility and the digital privacy landscape

ABOUT THE ACLU

The ACLU dares to create a more perfect union – beyond one person, party, or side. Our mission is to realize this promise of the United States Constitution for all and expand the reach of its guarantees.

For over 100 years, the ACLU has worked to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States. Whether it’s ending mass incarceration, achieving full equality for the LGBTQ+ community, establishing new privacy protections for our digital age, or preserving the right to vote or the right to have an abortion, the ACLU takes up the toughest civil liberties cases and issues to defend all people from government abuse and overreach.

Equity, diversity, and inclusion are core values of the ACLU and central to our work to advance liberty, equality, and justice for all. We are a community committed to learning and growth, humility and grace, transparency and accountability. We believe in a collective responsibility to create a culture of belonging for all people within our organization – one that respects and embraces difference; treats everyone equitably; and empowers our colleagues to do the best work possible. We are as committed to anti-oppression and anti-racism internally as we are externally. Because whether we’re in the courts or in the office, we believe ‘We the People’ means all of us.

The ACLU is an equal opportunity employer. We value a diverse workforce and an inclusive culture. The ACLU encourages applications from all qualified individuals without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, national origin, marital status, citizenship, disability, veteran status and record of arrest or conviction, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law. Black people, Indigenous people, people of color; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex people; women; people with disabilities, protected veterans, and formerly incarcerated individuals are all strongly encouraged to apply.

The ACLU makes every effort to assure that its recruitment and employment provide all qualified persons, including persons with disabilities, with full opportunities for employment in all positions.

The ACLU is committed to providing reasonable accommodation to individuals with disabilities. If you are a qualified individual with a disability and need assistance applying online, please email [email protected]. If you are selected for an interview, you will receive additional information regarding how to request an accommodation for the interview process.
