Corporate Accounting Specialist Jobs

Under minimal supervision, the primary responsibilities of this position includes creating and posting of highly complex month-end journal entries, reconciling general ledger accounts and creating management reports.

• Reviews balance sheet accounts during month-end close and analyzes Valero’s elimination companies to understand how they are utilized to create consolidated financial statements.
• Reports the impact of expenses to management (i.e., administrative, foreign exchange gains and losses, RINS, and other environmental regulations).
• Adjusts and reconciles monthly benefit accruals, pension and other postemployment benefits (OPEB) accounts.
• Assists and completes various ad-hoc reports and special projects, including the accounting for acquisitions and divestitures.
• Completes income statement, balance sheet, and ad-hoc reports issued by the area.
• Completes reports as part of quarterly or year-end reporting (i.e., reports for the Controller’s binder and Prepared by Client reports for Valero’s external auditors).
• Reconciles assigned general ledger accounts on a monthly basis.
• Creates and posts highly complex month-end journal entries (i.e., consolidations and related eliminations, legal and environmental regulation costs, and equity accounting for Valero's foreign affiliates).

This position is salaried exempt status, which means you are not eligible for overtime pay.

• Ability to communicate effectively through written and verbal methods preferred.
• CPA preferred or actively pursuing.
• Working knowledge of SAP and its applications preferred.
• 5 years of accounting, public accounting, and/or auditing experience required.
• Ability to read and interpret company policies, regulatory guidelines, and other work-related documentation preferred.
• Ability to identify appropriate resources for answering specific inquiries, analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action preferred.
• Familiarity with pension and OPEB accounting preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (i.e., Word and Excel) preferred.
• Ability to assist in orienting and training other employees preferred.
• Ability to accomplish work within required timelines, including short, long, and emergency timeframes preferred.
• Positive attitude and strong work ethic preferred.
• Skill in providing thorough, efficient, and effective customer service to individuals at all levels within the organization preferred.
• Thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles, theories, and ability to apply them to the Corporation’s accounting needs preferred.
• Ability to abide by confidentiality requirements when working with sensitive information, results, and communications preferred.
• Ability to cross-train in other department duties to ensure efficient coverage of department responsibilities preferred.
• Ability to work with others to accomplish challenging assignments preferred.
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple assignments to ensure completion of tasks within stated time requirements preferred.
• Ability to conduct basic research using accounting applications and other sources to perform accounting functions preferred.
• Ability to resolve some Accounting questions and problems preferred.
• Experience in refining industry preferred.
• Bachelor’s or higher-level degree in Accounting required.

Position level and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
