Job Description

As a Construction Inspector for the City, you will be carrying out all responsibilities in accordance with clearly established departmental policies and procedures, City codes and ordinances, and state and federal regulations.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities Include
  • Ability to read, understand, and be familiar with all approved construction plans and city specifications.
  • Ability to update and maintain city records related to inspections including weekly and monthly reporting as required by supervisor.
  • Ability to identify and present possible solutions for project-related complications to project managers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Assist with site investigations and the implementation of the MS4 program.
  • Perform daily inspections of all materials and workmanship of development and utility projects as assigned to ensure compliance with approved plans and city specifications. Ability to effectively communicate with utility providers, contractors, and project managers about required adjustments or identified deficiencies.
  • Assist with updating or developing process improvements to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ensure supervisors are informed of and approve any changes needed prior to field adjustments.
  • Ability to utilize daily city-issued computer equipment in the field for plan review and documentation.
  • Ability to monitor water and wastewater pressure and leakage tests; prepare and maintain related inspection records.
  • Attend preconstruction meetings to ensure a full understanding of the project and inspection items.
  • Participate in amending or updating construction standards and standard details; remain current regarding developing trends and changes in federal, state, and local regulatory practices.
  • Must have a general knowledge of land development construction practices.
  • Understand the general procedures for the installation of pavement and underground utilities.
  • Prepare daily reports entirely and accurately documenting all work performed before leaving the site.
  • May train and oversee less experienced Construction Inspectors, as requested.
  • Ability to monitor street course density and moisture tests; prepare and maintain related inspection records.
Qualifications And Skill Requirements
Construction Inspector I $49,706-$77,044
  • 0-3 years of experience.
  • Obtain within the first year and maintain; Water and wastewater Class D*, Excavation safety awareness for utilities, Confined space awareness, and Work zone safety for utilities.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class C driver's license
  • College-level courses in construction technology or equivalent are desirable.
Construction Inspector II $52,191 - $80,896
  • 3-6 years of experience.
  • Water and wastewater Class C
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Stormwater basic
  • Valid Class C driver's license
  • College-level courses in construction technology or equivalent are desirable.
Construction Inspector III $54,801 - $84,941
  • Valid Class C driver's license
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • College-level courses in construction technology or equivalent are desirable.
  • 6 plus years of experience.
  • Water and wastewater Class C
  • Stormwater basic
Environmental Factors And Other Physical Requirements (Work Environment)
  • Will be required to work in settings with extreme cold or extreme heat, depending on the time of year.

  • Retirement eligibility requires 5 years of service at age 60 or 20 years of service at any age.
  • Employer-paid basic term life insurance policy two (2) times an employee's base salary, up to $325,000 maximum.
  • Long-Term Disability is employer-paid and covers 60% of the employee's salary up to $7,500.
  • 24 hours of paid personal holiday leave each fiscal year.
  • Retirement plan includes a 7% contribution of an employee's gross salary to the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) with a City contribution match of 2 to 1 (14%) at retirement.
  • Education reimbursement assistance up to $5,000 per fiscal year.
  • Longevity pay of $8 per month begins with the first anniversary and will be paid on a separate paycheck in December of each year.
  • 10 wellness hours each fiscal year for eligible preventive and mental health services.
  • 10 hours of vacation leave per month, 3 weeks per year.
  • Dental benefits are provided at zero premium cost to the employee.
  • Military leave provides up to 15 days of paid leave per fiscal year for eligible employees.
