Job Description
The City of Pearland, TX is seeking to hire a full-time Construction Inspector to help lead and improve aspects of the day-to-day operations of our Engineering & Public Works Division. The Construction Inspector earns a competitive salary of $23.35-25.28.60/hour based on qualifications. Additionally, the city pays all premiums for our employees' dental, long-term disability protection, and life insurance plus the majority portion of the medical premium for employees and their dependents. A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR


Job Summary: Represents the Engineering Department by performing detailed inspections and reports of any/all portions of construction work to ensure that procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications.


Essential Functions


  • Communicates with engineering firms, contractors and supervisor to answer questions and assist with problems. Attends pre-construction meetings.
  • Regular and timely attendance at work is required.
  • Performs tests on water and sewer pipelines, concrete pours, sanitary sewer force mains, vacuum test, B.T. tests on water lines and lamp lines to assure alignment.
  • Observes work in progress to ensure that procedures followed, and materials used conform to specifications.
  • Contributes to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintains daily log of construction and inspection activities and compares progress reports.
  • Measures distances to verify accuracy of dimensions of l installations and layouts. Verifies levels, alignment, and elevation of installations.
  • Interprets plans and specifications for contractor and discusses deviations from specified construction procedures to ensure compliance with regulations governing construction.


Minimum Education, Experience, And Licenses


  • Preference given to related construction/inspections certifications (American Concrete Institute, TEEX, APWA, Etc.)
  • Valid, Class C Texas Driver's License required.
  • NPDES Certified Storm water Inspector desired or required to obtain within 12 months.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must have a minimum of one (1) year related experience in materials testing, surveying, engineering, heavy construction or as a heavy construction inspector. Approved education or credentials may be substituted for some of the experience.


Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities


  • Must have, organizational, and communicative skills.
  • Must be able to follow oral and written directions; work well under pressure and stress; handle multiple tasks; and prioritize work assignments.
  • Must have mathematical skills in calculating grades, volumes, and areas.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have a working knowledge of Windows software.
  • Must have a working knowledge of public improvements construction to include street, paving, water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, earth work, concrete, job safety, and testing procedures.
  • Must be able to work extensive hours, as needed.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to speak effectively with customers and employees; ability to read and interpret documents such as plans and specifications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and policy and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have the ability to use a tape measure, engineering scale, shovel, probing rod, pens/pencils, truck, personal computer, tablet, telephone, cell phone.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • In order to perform this job satisfactorily, an individual Must have the ability to use engineering drawings and specifications to inspect and confirm (not supervise) materials used, materials testing, heavy construction methods and procedures, survey and alignment of roads, bridges, water and sewer lines and plants. Also, shall possess a working knowledge of the City of Pearland Standard Details, Federal and State regulations and traffic control plans by Texas Department of Transportation.
