The salary for this role is between $156,400 and $312,800.


The Opportunity

Our location in Alameda, CA currently has an opportunity for a Commercial Director, Canada & Latin America. This individual directs key strategies, tactics, and activities for the CALA Commercial Team.


What You’ll Work On


  • Ensures that their team operates in a legal and ethical manner and that products and services are marketed in accordance with compliance requirements.
  • Aligns strategy with business unit long-range vision/plan and ensures that objectives are achieved aiming to accelerate growth
  • Establishes strategies for the CALA Commercial Team and oversees all activities required to achieve them including Strategy, Communications, and Project Management

Ideal Skillset


  • Managing and tracking investments across CALA with KPIs aligned with top and bottom-line goals.
  • Proficient in Spanish
  • Experience in regional and/or global commercial capacity with an understanding of market complexity across countries.
  • Streamlining commercial effectiveness measures and processes across CALA.
  • Act as a consultant to Regional/Local Sales Directors, GMs, CMs, and DVP on commercial strategies. Challenging status quo to accelerate growth and connection to global commercial counterparts for a One Abbott approach.
  • Establishes and directs strategies for the CALA Commercial Team as aligned to the business strategy/LRP and oversees all activities required to achieve them including Strategy, Communications, and Project Management.


Commercial Understanding


  • Ability to incorporate consumer and customer insights and trends to drive growth.
  • Develop and implement commercial strategies according to company goals and objectives aiming to accelerate growth.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of business drivers and an ability to influence them to achieve growth.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of what customers want and how they work.
  • Responsible for overall market research and analysis to create detailed business plans on commercial opportunities (expansion, business development etc.).


Commercial Leadership


  • Leading product life cycle management, the development, creation and assessment of emerging market and new segment strategies as well as business models
  • Full budgetary responsibility for designated budgets, managing and tracking investments with KPIs aligned with top and bottom line goals
  • Roll-out commercial forecasting and assessment tools as part of the ongoing business planning cycles like LBE, IBP and LRP as well as for the evaluation of future business / product launch opportunities; identify, develop and provide insights on key performance and leading indicators to capitalize on opportunities and minimize risk
  • Anticipate changes in economic, competitive and market environments and provide appropriate strategic recommendations that maximize commercial objectives and enhance overall business process. Coordinate the Area Competitive Intelligence team
  • Act as a consultant to Regional/Local Sales Directors, General Managers, and DVP on appropriate commercial strategies

  • Promote cross-functional understanding of Sales, Marketing, Commercial Excellence. Facilitate appropriate support with internal and external partners for planned strategy and initiatives.

Required Qualifications


  • BS or BA required; MBA strongly preferred due to the business complexity and P&L support of the position.
  • Sustained experience and proven results in the following areas: approximately 8-10 years of experience and successful track record in marketing, commercial functions, ideally in the health care arena and managing a P&L

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate with a multitude of functions; outstanding communication and presentation skills.
  • Leading of successful commercial teams, several years of people management experience
  • Strong presentation, communication and motivational skills
  • Ability to motivate, focus, and lead a diverse group of people; demonstrated effectiveness at developing talent throughout organizational levels.
  • Leading change management processes and ability to build strategic plans / contingency plans in times of uncertainty
  • Proven track record of developing successful commercial strategies, tactics, including implementation
  • Proven ability to develop and execute complex strategic business plans, proven effectiveness in financial and budget management.
  • Strong analytical ability and understanding.
  • Ability to travel 50-60% of the time
