DESCRIPTION

The mission of the Student Health & Well-Being (SHW) cluster is to promote a culture of health and well-being for the student community, deliver equitable high quality innovative services, incorporate inclusive approaches, and celebrate diversity, with the goal of adoption and maintenance of healthy behaviors contributing to the academic success and personal development of all students.

The Student Health and Well-being cluster of the UC San Diego, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active well-being culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. Under the oversight of the executive director, the SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and SHW Administration.

CAPS delivers campus-based mental health services to over 42,000 registered UCSD undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students. CAPS' multicultural, multidisciplinary, and student-centered staff strives to deliver trauma informed, culturally proficient counseling and psychiatric services, psycho-educational preventive outreach and early intervention programming, consultation, research, and training opportunities.

In collaboration with Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, CAPS services support the academic mission of the University aimed at student success, retention and well-being, and works toward the maintenance of a just, inclusive and healthy living and learning environment for individuals to flourish as they pursue their academic, career, and personal goals. CAPS is accredited by the International Accreditation of Counseling Services (IACS) and the Post-doctoral Resident Training Program is affiliated with the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Center (APPIC). CAPS is fully committed to self-examination, peer review, and quality improvement through the utilization of metrics, data, clinical outcomes, client experience measurements and feedback.

UCSD CAPS is seeking a skilled mental health professional, experienced in reducing barriers to mental health care in a multicultural university environment, to provide counseling and clinical services to a diverse student population. Primary liaison responsibilities for this position will be addressing the mental health needs of International Students to foster their academic success, wellness and intercultural experience at UCSD. This position requires proven training, expertise, commitment, and sustained engagement working with students in global education programs, towards their personal development, sense of belonging, well-being, and academic success, through culturally proficient individual, group and community interventions. Includes post-ventions to mitigate the effects of trauma following global conflicts, local and political events which may impact immigration and/or student status.

This licensed professional performs psychological assessments towards diagnosis and the formulation of a treatment plan, the provision of focused psychotherapy and referral of students to appropriate level of care. Also participates in after hours, on-call, and urgent care coverage. The incumbent provides consultation to faculty, staff and administration, engages in mental health promotion and education to a diverse college population, and delivers preventive outreach including psycho-educational programming and evaluation. Incumbent also provides supervision and training of CAPS Post-doctoral Residents and maintains quality assurance and improvement in compliance standards.

Recent Postdoctoral Residents must provide a cover letter demonstrating the ability to be licensed prior to the start date.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in a related mental health area.
  • As appropriate, submit incident reports into the UCSD SHW Incident Report System, RL Datix or current system in use, to report near-misses, process problems or patient or employee injury events. Attend required trainings and refreshers for use and proper steps to follow.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality of client, students, faculty, and staff disclosures, and comply with all requirements in use of computer systems and access to any and all patient, student, employee and University data, in electronic and hard copy formats, in compliance with University, state and federal guidelines, including, but not limited to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act(HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of state and federal health care privacy laws, Title IX, VAWA, ADA, Title II, HIPAA and FERPA, as well as professional ethics or regulations that govern the work.
  • Knowledge of business software and specialized applications / systems used in behavioral health settings. Working knowledge of electronic medical/mental health records systems (EMR or EHR).
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of clinical counseling principles, methods, procedures, and standards. Advanced knowledge of a specific counseling domain. Knowledge and experience providing time-limited counseling or brief psychotherapy, evaluation, diagnosis, and crisis intervention.
  • Demonstrated expertise working with diverse student populations, including proven success addressing their social/ecological and psychological experiences and dynamics on campus to foster their matriculation and academic achievements.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication with the ability to influence and persuade. Ability to communicate clearly, and effectively orally and in writing demonstrated by skills to record in a neat, orderly and logical manner, as well as to engage in a helpful, non-judgmental manner orally in person and by phone.
  • Advanced ability to develop and present educational programs and / or workshops. Specifically, to develop and implement culturally proficient, responsive, and effective outreach programs and provide consultation, mental health promotion, and preventative psycho-educational outreach services addressing the needs of students participating in Global Education Programs (International students, Study Abroad, etc). Group facilitation skills to lead meetings and groups.
  • Demonstrated skill in assessing and effectively managing mental health emergencies, risk and disposition through case management and efficient follow up.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion to foster the best possible working and learning environment. Demonstrated ability to actively foster a positive, welcoming climate, and value, include and support all in the UC San Diego community.
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to acknowledge, advocate and support the efforts to dismantle structural racism and divisive biases based on race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion, and political beliefs.
  • A valid California license as a mental health provider (Psychologist, LMFT, LCSW or LPCC) in good standing.

PREFERRED QULAIFICATIONS

  • Specific training and/or experience working with problems particularly prevalent in college-age population, and in interdisciplinary setting focusing on student wellness.
  • Fluent to provide therapy in English and Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Tagalog, Arabic, Farsi, or Hindi languages.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must work on campus, with ability to telecommute for work, if/when needed and operationally feasible, as determined by department.
  • Must work evenings, weekends, holidays, and as needed, for after-hours emergency coverage.
  • Various work locations, if needed and deemed necessary by the department.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $63,400 - $142,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $30.36 - $68.39

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
