Under the supervision of the Deputy Director, the Associate Education Director assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of the San Mateo County History Museum’s education programs with the goal of enhancing the understanding and interpretation of its collections and resources and increasing public access to them. This encompasses school programs, public programs for adults and children, docent training, outreach programs, printed materials and educational interactives in exhibitions.The Associate Education Director will work with staff and volunteers to meet the education goals of the organization’s strategic plan.
Responsibilities:
- Update the education pages of the organization’s website.
- Assist with the training of volunteers.
- Help coordinate the Family Past Times program, a series of arts and crafts for children in family groups. Duties include creating craft activities, organizing materials, assisting with scheduling of volunteers, publicity and program evaluation.
- Work with the Deputy Director on developing and implementing creative programs needed to fulfill the strategic goals of the organization. This could include working to establishing summer programs for youth, programs for adults and school and public programs related to new exhibits.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Manage the Playing in the Past, a preschool activity hour.Duties include selecting books, organizing craft activities, assisting with publicity and presenting the program.
- Work with the Deputy Director on 1-2 larger public programs each year at the History Museum.
- Manage interactive programs and tours for school groups (primarily 1st– 4th grade) and adult tours at the San Mateo County History Museum.Duties include oversight of scheduling, supervising docents and organizing needed resources. The Associate Education Director will present programs and tours for all age levels.
- Working closely with Deputy Director and volunteers, provide a helpful environment for Museum visitors during tours and programs.
- Assist in coordinating the Courthouse Docket program, a monthly series of lectures and performances for adults. Duties include scheduling presenters, researching topics, assisting with publicity and program evaluation.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Degree in museum studies, history or education or two years of experience in a museum education department.
- General knowledge of and/or interest in history of California and San Mateo County preferred.
Traits, Skills and Abilities:
- Basic understanding of PC graphic design software.
- Ability to work successfully in a multi-cultural community. Fluency in Spanish is desirable, but not required.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to work enthusiastically and effectively with visitors, museum staff, volunteers and program participants (including adults and children).
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to be flexible while working in a busy, active public work environment.
- Public speaking or teaching experience highly preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Requires time working at a computer, standing, walking and some bending.
- Will need access to a car to move between Historical Association sites.
- Will include moving light furniture and program props.Will require lifting objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
Status: Full-time.Normal work schedule of Tuesday – Saturday. Occasional evening or holiday hours will be required.
Pay: $28.75 per hour – $31.25 per hour, commensurate with experience.Includes health benefits.
Location: Majority of time at San Mateo County History Museum, 2200 Broadway, Redwood City, CA94063.
