Job Description

The School of Architecture and Design (SoAD) at Wentworth Institute of Technology invites applications for a position in Industrial Design at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.
Teaching responsibilities for these positions will include lecture courses, seminars, and design studios. Programmatic coursework ranges from hands-on foundation level courses in drawing, modelmaking, color theory, and visual communications to more advanced upper-level coursework in CAD, rapid-prototyping, research methodology, design theory, and thematic design studios.

Faculty members are expected to work collaboratively and interdependently within a small group, deliver courses that integrate their areas of expertise, engage in an active research and scholarship agenda, advise students, and meet service obligations (school, university, and community). Lastly, the ability to demonstrate both methodological and pedagogical flexibility is also expected to meet the demands of our students and the evolving profession.
Applicant qualifications include a terminal degree in Industrial Design, Design, Art or related field (e.g., Master of Design, Master of Fine Arts, and/or PhD.)
Rank is negotiable, based on qualifications and experience. The position includes a comprehensive benefits package and a competitive salary.

About Wentworth and the School of Architecture and Design:
Wentworth Institute of Technology is located in Boston, Massachusetts, and comprises the Schools of Architecture and Design, Computing and Data Science, Engineering, Management, and Sciences and Humanities. Wentworth is a member of the Colleges of the Fenway consortium — an association of Boston institutions including Emmanuel College, Simmons University, Massachusetts College of Art, and Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. One of the many opportunities afforded to faculty is the ability to collaborate across these institutions and to share resources.

Wentworth is a university with a teaching focus and strategic initiatives of diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence, high-value learning, transformational student experience, and next-generation partnerships. The school has a strong commitment to recruit and retain students with diverse backgrounds, foster a vibrant design community and learning environment for faculty and students, and build on and expand current government, community, industry, and alumni partnerships. For more information about Wentworth’s Strategic Plan, see:
Wentworth’s School of Architecture and Design (SoAD) embraces the essential role our courses and curriculum play in academic achievement and eliminating equity gaps. We seek new faculty to join a community committed to teaching excellence, curricular innovation, and mentoring of students. SoAD offers highly respected programs in Industrial Design (BS – NASAD accredited), Interior Design (BS – CIDA accredited), and Architecture (BS, M.Arch – NAAB accredited). The mission of the SoAD is to empower design students and educators from all backgrounds to become creative, civic-minded problem-solvers, responding to global challenges and contributing to local communities. The SoAD guides students to engage locally and globally, to explore advanced technologies, to collaborate within and across disciplines, to gain industry experience via cooperative education, and to learn to design sustainably and equitably. Comprising approximately 670 undergraduate and 90 graduate students, the SoAD has robust international study opportunities at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

About the Industrial Design Program:
Part of the School of Architecture and Design, the Industrial Design program at Wentworth offers a NASAD-accredited program with approximately 124 students currently enrolled. Wentworth’s Industrial Design Program focuses on preparing students to be hands-on problem solvers and thoughtful designers. Classes and core curricula champion hand drawing and building skills in paper/wood/metal/plastic, as much as they embrace the digital technologies, such as CAD, Rapid Prototyping, and Computer AI, that are shaping the future of design. Our approach to design education is a simple and well-rounded one that addresses the ever-changing shape of design in the 21st century, teaches students to ask thoughtful questions and gives them the tools, methods, and technologies to make beautiful answers. Advanced studio concentrations may include consumer products, education, toys, sports and medical equipment, footwear, and housewares. Classroom experiences are complemented by two mandatory co-ops that reinforce coursework and bridge the gap between academia and the profession.
