Job Description
JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for coordination of age appropriate activities that focus on leadership, life skills, and sensitive topic awareness and supervision of youth that utilize the program on- or off-site.
MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Participates in the development of and/or recommends new policies and procedures to enforce and/or revise program activities, goals, and objectives.
  • Maintains logs for vehicle mileage and program equipment/supplies, reporting concerns of damage, maintenance, and/or repairs needed to supervisor.
  • Researches and present activities to Supervisor for monthly schedule development. Activities may include using a variety of techniques, including lectures, projects, exhibits, audiovisual and library resources, computers, and the internet. Activities encourages are to be focused on leadership, self-confidence, self-empowerment, self-respect, alcohol/drug prevention, other sensitive awareness or prevention topics; and other positive, healthy life-style topics.
  • Prepares and distributes program packets when applicable; communicates program information to parents and youth both regularly and as-needed through various sources.
  • Reports any problems with youth behavior, parent behavior, or staff to Supervisor via incident report; reports and documents serious incidents (child abuse, sexual abuse, etc.) to Supervisor and when necessary involves appropriate authorities (911, MCFS, etc.).
  • Uses motivational techniques to encourage teamwork, cooperation, self-esteem, self-confidence, decision making, problem solving of participants; establishes achievable goals and objectives with participants.
  • Works with Supervisor to develop schedules detailing times and activities for youth; allows each youth opportunity to play in all games, in differing positions on field/court.
  • Provides instruction and monitors youth participants; maintains order during activities/games by counseling youth with behavioral challenges; documents and reports interactions; recommends disciplinary action as needed.
  • Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
  • Supervises youth participants; provides youth participants with positive support, guidance, and training/development opportunities in coordination with both on-site or off-site youth activities and/or field trips.
  • Prepares, modifies, and maintains written reports and/or financial and statistical reports and provides regular updates regarding program participants to committees, supervisor or manager as requested and/or needed.
  • Interprets, implements, and ensures compliance with the Youth Development Program standards and Tribal regulatory compliance. Abides by MIT Personnel Policies and Procedures and enforces Youth Code of Conduct.
  • Provides a safe environment for youth by checking condition of facilities and equipment used; examines field/playground equipment prior to play for unexpected hazards; provides basic first-aid or contacts emergency services for severe injuries; keeps youth information sheet easily accessible for emergency contact information and/or existing medical conditions information.
  • Establishes and maintains a network of relationships with other Tribal departments and outside agencies that may provide services or resources to youth participants; maintains professionalism in carrying out duties and interactions with others.
  • Attends staff meetings, trainings, and obtains/maintains proper certifications; collaborates with co-workers; accessible by phone or email during shift.
  • Provides assistance in meal preparation and transportation of participants when needed.

EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION:
Required: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Three (3) years experience in supervising youth and coordinating activities for youth.

Preferred:
Some college-level education, preferably with coursework in early childhood education. Valid and current S.T.A.R.S. certification. Experience working with Native Americans and/or within a Tribal community. Experience with providing culturally competent support aimed at opening pathways for individuals towards education and self-sufficiency. Experience working with youth who have life challenges.
SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION:
Skill in: Supervisory techniques and practices to include managing, scheduling, assigning, coordinating, and monitoring work of others; motivational techniques; communicating effectively verbally and in writing; listening effectively; observing reactions/interactions of others; problem-solving; conflict resolution; evaluating options and implementing solutions; using a computer and standard office equipment.

Knowledge of
: Mathematics; the English language including composition and grammar; methods of teaching and instruction for individuals and groups; laws and government regulations; human behavior and performance; learning and motivation; Native American culture and history; drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Ability to:
Maintain confidentiality; maintain a positive attitude and work ethic; effectively communicate information and ideas, both written and verbal; comprehend information, both written and verbal; form culturally competent, non-judgmental, supportive and empowering relationships with youth; gather and interpret data, reach logical conclusions, and present findings and recommendations; use independent judgment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this class.
The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, balance, bend at the waist, crouch, kneel, twist, use foot controls, and operate a motor vehicle. The employee must frequently lift carry and/or push/pull up to twenty pounds (20 lbs.).The employee is frequently required to sit, talk, or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to grasp, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, and peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud. Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions. Occasionally may sit to perform administrative tasks.
Licenses or Certifications Required: A current and valid Washington State driver’s license, CPR/First Aid certificate, and Food Handlers permit.
