Job Description
The VP of Sustainability will work closely with the senior management team and division and department leaders. The VP will be a senior-level sustainability subject matter expert, and proven leader, manager, and influencer, who thrives in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial environment and builds strong relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders. This position is responsible for the overall creation, development, and implementation of the system sustainability strategy. The position will also be responsible for leading the sustainability program and developing strategic approaches to stakeholder engagement to drive successful sustainability outcomes.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Identify and evaluate current and emerging sustainability trends and developments, especially pertaining to climate, biodiversity and human rights to formulate and propose risk management and business strategies to address various environmental concerns including energy use, conservation, reduction of pollution, recycling, building and facility design, and general education on sustainability.
Develop sustainability targets, multi-year roadmap, and manage implementation of programs to drive evolution of sustainability and social compliance with attention to factors such as cost effectiveness, feasibility, and ease of integration with other programs.
Assess and analyze company policies and processes to identify areas in and processes to which improvements can be made in accordance with the systems commitment to sustainability.
Monitor energy, environmental and climate policy developments globally, federally, and locally, and partners with Government Relations to assess and communicate the implications for the system and business activities.
Serve as primary point of contact within the system for all sustainability-related activities. Works in partnership with leaders across the system to educate, support, and develop their long-term sustainability goals and strategies, methods by which to implement and measure progress, and new initiatives to meet system sustainability goals. Supports the sustainability efforts undertaken by our hospitals / medical centers, with a focus on population and public health.
Build and manage data collection systems that support internal and external reporting requirements, which includes greenhouse gas emissions, energy, water, waste, building certifications, and other relevant metrics
Lead system reporting and ESG disclosures, including system’s sustainability/ESG communications and CDP.
Monitor advancements in sustainability reporting frameworks to inform further development of Advocate Aurora’s reporting strategy and practices
Drafts and prepares reports, presentations, and proposals; presents proposals and recommendations to the Chief Executive Officer, Senior leaders, board committees, and other key stakeholders.
Represent the Sustainability team and the system in key industry forums, sustainability-focused trade associations and multi-stakeholder initiatives, in addition to industry events and conferences
Develops and maintains appropriate documentation and records including budgets and other financials.
Prepares documentation required for project funding for various environmental initiatives including proposals and grant applications.
Performs human resources responsibilities for staff which include interviewing and selection of new employees, promotions, staff development, performance evaluations, compensation changes, resolution of employee concerns, corrective actions, terminations, and overall employee morale.
Responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and for ensuring that personal actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations and laws applicable to the organization's business.
Education Required:
Master's Degree in healthcare, Master’s in Business Administration, Master's Degree in Climate or Master’s Degree in Public Relations.
Experience Required: Typically requires 8+ years of management experience in sustainability or ESG role including 5+ years of experience in healthcare. Typically requires 3 years of management experience in the management of staff, budgets, and multiple complex functions.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
Extensive working knowledge of health care sustainable operations best practices.
Knowledge in supply chain operations.
Extensive knowledge in environmentally preferable procurement standards and third-party diversity certifications.
Experience with greenhouse gas accounting protocols preferred.
Knowledge of sustainability frameworks such as GRI, SASB, SDG, and CDP.
Knowledge base and experience with reporting or engaging to help drive progress in key ESG topic areas of Public Health, Quality, Patient and Consumer Safety, Access, Human Rights, Human Capital Management, Digital Innovation (emerging technologies) and Product Sustainability.
Adept in strategic thinking, research, managing through influence, technical and analytical skills.
Strong communication, relational and presentation skills.
Ability to work across disciplines.
Ability to travel throughout the geography of the organization.
Skills in Microsoft Office applications.
Experience using Energy Star Portfolio Manager a plus.
Ability to manage staff across multiple sites and develop and nurture matrix relationships.
Ability to relate well to external stakeholders.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires travel, therefore, will be exposed to weather and road conditions.
Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
