Defense & Security
CAE’s Defense & Security is a $2B, 6,000+ employee business operating under a Special Security Agreement (SSA) to mitigate foreign ownership, control or influence in order to allow the execution of classified work and research and development in the United States. CAE is a global leader in the development and delivery of integrated live, virtual, and constructive (LVC) training solutions for defense forces. Most militaries leverage a combination of live training on actual platforms, virtual training in simulators, and constructive training using computer-generated simulations. The solutions provided by CAE’s Defense and Security business unit typically include a combination of training services, simulation products and software tools designed to cost effectively maintain and enhance safety, efficiency, mission readiness and decision-making capabilities.
Summary
CAE is seeking an experienced Vice President, Engineering who will be responsible for leading an Engineering Center of Excellence to support the design and development of fully integrated, digitally immersive training and simulation services. With an eye on continued growth and evolution of the simulation environment, this position will actively engage customers, end users and industry partners to develop comprehensive multi-domain training solutions. The ideal candidate will possess digital acuity - the ability to recognize and act on evolving technology trends impacting the business. Additionally, the Vice President, Engineering will be an experienced and exceptionally well-rounded leader with a focus on customer relationships, solid financial acumen, demonstrated successful Engineering leadership, and operational savviness.
Specific Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership, vision and direct support to engineering planning and execution functions including short-, mid-, and long-term engineering proposal solutions, technical and complex product planning and execution, technical innovation, and strategic customer and partner relationships
  • Oversee digital architecture mapping and automation of internal processes for operational integration
  • Direct engineering tool consolidation, evaluation, and improvement across the organization
  • Development and execution of Defense & Security’s technology strategy, integrated with CAE’s overall plan, and launch major initiatives to realize results over time
  • Actively participate as team member and provide leadership to CAE’s Global Digital Technology Leadership team for the benefit of CAE’s over all business and representing D&S requirements.
  • Lead a complex engineering organization from within the SSA composed of 1,800 engineers with hardware, software, instructional development and production responsibilities within a multi-location environment
  • Plan and prepare short-term and long-range plans and budgets based on company goals and growth objectives
  • Effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or the CAE USA Board of Directors
  • Provide guidance on overall commerciality and licensing of software products
  • Ensure compliance to policies and regulation of all delivered Engineering and IT services
  • Responsible for customer satisfaction by ensuring adherence to contractual requirements for quality and schedule performance
  • Explore new applications of technology utilizing generative Artificial Intelligence, Automation and Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, DevSecOps, and Cloud Computing to advance operational tradecraft and achieve mission advantage
  • Participate in and supervise bid and proposal activities
  • Make sound business decisions in a highly competitive, fast moving environment
Executive Management
  • Serves as a member of the Executive Leadership Team of the Defense & Security Business Unit
  • Participates in and drives key decisions pertaining to strategic initiatives and operational excellence
  • Within a matrix reporting structure, act as the D&S and SSA lead for all Engineering related activities, and participate and collaborate with CAE’s Chief Technology and Product Officer
  • Brief monthly at Monthly Business Reviews and quarterly at Executive Management Committee reviews
Team Management
  • Inspire and lead effort within D&S Engineering towards greater technological innovation and strategy
  • Identify, evaluate, and resolve complex business challenges in a collaborative manner through cross-functional business teams
  • Oversee planning, budgeting, staffing, coordination, training and activities of functional working groups as required
  • Responsible for leading global Software, Hardware, IT, and IRAD teams across the organization
  • Accountable for the overall success of engineering functions throughout the global organization. Candidate will be responsible for leading transformational change in a rapidly growing business focused on developing and evolving engineering systems, processes, and procedures. Proactive engagement with a diverse staff operating in a high-OPTEMO environment supporting critical national security requirements
Professional Experience/Qualifications
  • Ability to support CONUS/OCONUS travel
  • Model based systems engineering experience a plus
  • Ability to ensure solutions are technically compliant to Cybersecurity requirements
  • 15+ years of extensive and progressive leadership experience acquired with a government contractor. Prior experience supporting the U.S. Defense market preferred
  • Knowledge in both hardware and software product experience a plus
  • Global perspective and the ability to adapt quickly to different cultures with an appreciation for diverse added value perspectives
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical discipline with proven experience and demonstrated leadership ability required. Graduate degree in technical discipline or MBA preferred
  • Extensive understanding of IT best practices, such as ITIL processes
  • Experience managing the development and maintenance of complex business systems and/or associated applications
  • High level of integrity and ability to inspire others through transformation that drives business results
  • Substantial cross-functional team leadership ability is required
  • Must currently hold and maintain a US Department of Defense Security Clearance, TS/SCI desired
  • Comprehensive understanding of the software development lifecycle, SAFE, and modern technologies such as cloud computing, virtualization, artificial intelligence, and data analytics
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents
  • Experience working in companies dealing with government contracts and international multi-site operations. Special Security Agreement knowledge experience a plus
