Upper School Science Preceptor (Part-Time)

The Chapin School, an independent K-12 day school for girls located in New York City, seeks a student-centered, collaborative, and innovative educator to serve as a part-time, Upper School Science Preceptor.

Job Overview
The Upper School Science Preceptor is a part-time role, reporting daily from 7:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m., working with students who visit the Science Learning Center for instructional support and review. This individual reports to the Head of Upper School and works closely with the Upper School Science Department. The position begins Tuesday, September 5 and ends Friday, June 7.
Chapin’s Next Upper School Science Preceptor Will Be
A science educator who is familiar with high school Biology, Chemistry, and Physics curriculum. The preceptor primarily assists 9th and 10th graders studying Biology and Chemistry, respectively. The preceptor assists students by

• Building relationships with students who are struggling in Science classes so their motivation, confidence, and engagement improve over time.
• Helping students review and organize assignments and notes in order to prepare for assessments.
• Providing creative alternative explanations and approaches to material to supplement classroom work and help students understand topics.

A student-centered educator who values each student’s voice, experience, and history by

• Actively seeking out ways to generate student excitement for science and STEM-related fields because they believe all students are scientists in the making.
• Demonstrating effective pedagogy, particularly in response to the needs of students with a variety of backgrounds, learning needs, and interests.

A partner to students, their parents, and colleagues in teaching and learning who

• Seeks connections across disciplines so that students can integrate their learning across their classes and build meaningful connections that help their learning.
• Employs research-based strategies to reach all students through differentiated approaches, mindful of students’ receptive and expressive learning preferences.

Qualifications
Required

• Working towards or completion of a Bachelor’s degree in science
• At least 2-3 years teaching or tutoring experience in Class 8 - 12 science

Preferred

• Master’s degree in science and/or education
• Experience with differentiated pedagogies and instruction
