Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Phlebotomist.
In this role, the successful candidate Under supervision performs routine phlebotomy and laboratory central receiving duties. Prepares specimens for send-outs to Reference Laboratories and results reports into the laboratory computer system.
Job Responsibilities:
- Notes in computer any specimen integrity issues.
- Handles phone conversation in polite and complete manner
- When there are disagreements regarding issues he/she will make a personal attempt to resolve the problem in a collaborative manner that promotes a successful encounter.
- Patient left in a safe manner, bed rails up.
- Completes work or explains to coverage appropriate stage of processing and outstanding issues.
- Ability to handle light stock.
- Properly labels and documents tubes and label sets.
- Knows appropriate site selection and exclusions (i.e. scarring, mastectomy)
- At all times employees will adhere to the CORE values of the hospital without exception
- Identifies his/herself, wears hospital ID badge and clarifies his/her role to patient in an understandable and respectful fashion.
- Able to transmit electronic orders
- Recognizes safety hazards and acts promptly and appropriately.
- Communicates in a fashion that respects the individuality and dignity of each person. Promotes dialogue that is hones and non-confrontational.
- Identifies appropriate Reference Lab for analysis.
- Protects privacy of patient. (Closing curtains etc.)
- Understands general computer operation for this area.
- Properly greets patient.
- Adheres to hospital/department dress code. Arrives to work appropriately dressed, well groomed and neat.
- Informs coverage of appropriate stage of processing and any outstanding issues.
- Prioritizing draws
- Understands process of lab necessary and specimen integrity.
- Conforms to policies regarding confidentiality of information.
- Prepares document in computer or deletion, addition or changes in order.
- Follows proper procedure for Blood Culture Collection.
- May be required to draw outpatients at off-site locations.
- Proper procedure for picking up samples from Ambulatory Surgery area
- Heel stick technique
- Verifies and processes samples in an organized and timely fashion.
- Knowledge of proper specimen submission to reference lab.
- Knows complete process for manual and electronic reporting.
- Follows order of draw in multiple specimen collection.
- Distributes manual reports to appropriate location.
- Organize work to complete in a timely fashion.
- Notifies Supervisor of any unusual report, or phone request.
- Assists in processing or outpatient area when necessary.
- Protects confidentiality of patient.
- Follows call-in procedure when sick, late or absent.
- Prepares patient in an appropriate position.
- Properly faxes reports to Physician’s offices
- Identifies any additional need of patient and acts accordingly.
- Follows policies and procedures for sharp’s disposals.
- Maintains a consistent pattern of attendance
- Notifies supervisor of unusual issues or specimens.
- Follows IC procedures (Gloves, Hand washing)
- Properly documents all pertinent patient information.
- Works collaboratively with other staff to maintain cleanliness of work environment and equipment. (ie. Carts, EKG machine).
- Reports to supervisor or nursing any unusual condition of patient and document on label set and in computer
- Directs to Pathologist requests requiring approval.
- Knowledge of computer downtime procedure.
- Explains procedure and reassures patient.
- Selects appropriate tubes for tests ordered
- Assists with prevention of transmission of infection by adhering to Standard Precautions as evidenced by effective handwashing techniques.
- Normal Draw technique
- Finger stick technique
- Keeps a clean, neat and professional working appearance
- Refers question of patient to appropriate person. (i.e. Nursing, Supervisors)
- Identifies need for written (faxed) requests for patients results from non-staff physicians
- Performs EKGs correctly.
- Demonstrates through his/her actions that the patient and/or departmental goals are a priority.
- Responsible to make sure adequate supplies are in the area.
- Reports to assigned area on time for scheduled shift
- Investigates unusual tests for proper collection and transport.
- Knowledge of manual billing process for “Miscellaneous” reference tests
- Butterfly technique
- Assembles appropriate material. (Tubes, gloves, etc.)
- Delivers Separately all STAT requests to sections.
- Properly identifies patient.
- Completes all hospital requirements at designated times (i.e. annual assessment, educational, MedNetTra)
- Relay to supervisor any conflict in specimen identification or labeling.
- Handles equipment in accordance to laboratory policy.
- Keeps a clean, neat and professional working phlebotomy tray.
- Performs proper site sterilization techniques (preparation)
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a High School diploma
Phlebotomy Certificate Preferred or other Equivalent documentation and/or 5 years experience
General Office skills (Typing, Filing, Phone)
General Computer skills
General Organizational Skills
Knowledge of OSHA Regulations
Knowledge of Standard precautions
Must possess a valid drivers license
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
