Job Description
Riverdale Country School is a Pre-K through grade 12 independent school in New York City committed to empowering lifelong learners by developing minds, building character, and creating community in order to change our world for the good. Riverdale seeks to reflect the diversity of the New York metropolitan area in its students, faculty, and staff. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) is the foundational core of community-building that supports the school’s mission and empowers all community members to be their whole selves and thrive- especially those who historically have been and continue to be marginalized because of their cultural, ethnic, racial, linguistic, national, gender, sexual, spiritual, or socioeconomic identities and their physical, mental, or emotional well-being. Riverdale enrolls about 1,200 students who collectively reside in 117 different zip codes. Approximately 44% of our student body identify as students of color.

We seek to employ people who engage in all aspects of work with a student-centered approach, an open mind, passion, and a willingness to support the greater community. At Riverdale we recognize that the work of DEIB is iterative and requires a consistent commitment. Ideal candidates display that commitment in their work and/or in their approach to teaching and learning.

Position Overview

Riverdale’s Language Department seeks an enthusiastic and collegial teacher of Spanish with native or near-native fluency who can teach a wide range of students. Experience teaching across the Middle and Upper School levels is helpful. Our curriculum emphasizes developing oral, written, and intercultural competencies through authentic, communication-based engagement with the language. A passion for language learning, world cultures, and social justice characterizes our ideal candidate.

At the moment, this will be a first-semester position. The first semester runs from just after Labor Day through mid-January.

Riverdale is an Equal Opportunity Employer and complies with all federal, state, and local laws which prohibit discrimination in employment based on race, color, religion, sex, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, national and ethnic origin, alienage or citizenship status, marital or partnership status, caregiver status, predisposing genetic characteristics, disability, active military or veteran status, actual or perceived status as a victim of domestic violence, or any other basis protected by applicable law.
The salary range for this position is based on our faculty salary scale. Faculty are placed on “steps” on the scale based on years of experience and education. Sample steps for the academic year 2023-2024 are shown below in five-year increments:
Step 1: $57,850
Step 5: $65,073
Step 10: $75,393
Step 15: $84,299
