Department Summary
The Dean of Students Office fosters the development of leadership, civility, accountability, and responsibility in the University of North Texas student; builds community through service and involvement; and serves as an advocate for all students. This office is dedicated to supporting the UNT student who may need assistance in resolving complex personal and academic matters. We strive to help all students achieve their academic and personal goals and enhance the UNT student experience.
Position Overview
The Survivor Advocate would provide advocacy as well as direct services to UNT students who have experienced sexual assault, harassment, dating/domestic violence and stalking. This position is part of a Survivor Advocacy team that serves students and educates the UNT Community on Violence Prevention. The Survivor Advocate will help students who have been victimized must not only cope with the emotional and physical trauma of the crime, but they often continue to experience stressors related to the interface with the criminal justice system and the university system. The advocate would provide information about different options and support the survivor through their own decision-making process.

Job Duties
o
Be the first point of contact from the Dean of Students’ office to coordinate referrals for medical care, counseling, law enforcement and other services on campus and off campus as requested by the student; educate student on all options of reporting at the University (Title IX Coordinator, Dean of Students, UNT Police) and law enforcement.
o
Will provide crisis support for student survivors seeking out the Dean of Students office
o
Contact professors on behalf of the student if requested, to arrange for necessary
considerations for class changes and verified absences.
o
Coordinate with housing to facilitate room changes if necessary and help implement any safety parameters that have been put in place (such as no contact orders or protective orders).
o
Support the survivor throughout the entire investigation into possible violations of the Code of Student Conduct and Sexual Misconduct Policies
o
Support the survivor throughout the criminal investigation and subsequent court proceedings, if applicable.
o
Facilitate communication between the survivor and various systems including the police agencies, university officials and district attorney’s office staff and attend meetings with the survivor if requested.
o
Assist survivor in safety planning.
o
Provide information about protective orders and assist in the application process with the district attorney’s office and/ or Denton County Friends of the Family.
o
Assist in requesting Crime Victims Compensation from the Attorney General’s office through appropriate avenues.
o
Organize campus and community collaborative partnerships; programming and prevention efforts including student programming and education to be reported for the Annual Security Report. Programming such as Sexual Assault Awareness Month; Reporting such as 212 reports and Clery; presentations as needed, etc.
o
Serve on the CARE Team on all rotation in the Dean of Students for Survivors
o
Work with UNT Police, UNT Pride Alliance, Denton County Friends of the Family and other University and Community Resources to assist survivors.
o
Mandated reporter and Campus Security Authority

- Knowledge of needs of college students and student development theory.
- Knowledge and experience with sexual and relationship violence-related issues
- More than three years of experience counseling and advising college students or advocacy in college environment, women’s resource center, or human service agency.
- Master’s degree in Social Work, Community Counseling, Women’s Studies, Student Affairs etc.
