DESCRIPTION

The Staff Research Associate will assist the Principal Investigator and other lab members in research on the neural basis of behavioral variability and social behavior in the zebrafish (Danio Rerio) and micro glassfish (Danionella Cerebrum). The incumbent is responsible for the experimental care and maintenance of zebrafish and micro glassfish colonies (feeding, cleaning, breeding, cataloguing, maintaining), will perform behavioral and computational experiments (tracking behaving animals, using and developing custom Python software to track animal groups), and assist with other routine research tasks (behavioral experiments, histology, molecular labeling).

In addition, the Staff Research Associate will perform routine laboratory duties such as order and maintain lab equipment, supplies, and records; serve as lab safety coordinator; maintain the cleanliness of lab; prepare buffers, media, and solutions; and perform other general lab duties as needed. Train lab members on fish husbandry and lab safety protocols.

  • Must be willing and able to work with fish as a primary research subject.
  • Must be willing to work occasional overtime (evening or weekend) based on needs of experiments.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven experience with behavioral experiments, optogenetic manipulations, and multiphoton microscopy.
  • Proven knowledge of purchasing and reimbursement procedures. Skill in maintaining steady levels of lab supplies, maintaining purchasing records, and training others in purchasing procedures.
  • Experience with fish as a research model. Practical competency in the handling, breeding, and rearing of fish. Skill and ability to train lab members on fish husbandry techniques and lab safety protocols.
  • College level course or equivalent in general laboratory techniques and molecular techniques including the ability to prepare solutions and use a pH meter.
  • Proven ability to learn new experimental methods and work independently or collaboratively with other lab members, with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proven knowledge and ability to perform computational analysis of datasets using programming languages such as Python. Experience with Python preferred.
  • Proven laboratory experience with basic and general techniques in molecular biology including DNA and RNA preparation and extraction, molecular cloning, gel electrophoresis, PCR, etc. Skill and ability to follow multistep assays and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to use standard lab equipment such as centrifuge, microscope, balances, etc.
  • Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Programs. Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, and use of protective items such as gloves and goggles, etc. Knowledge of safety procedures using chemicals and radioactive material.
  • Theoretical and practical background and knowledge in Molecular, Cell Biology, Neurobiology/Neurosciences and Biochemistry acquired through a BS degree or higher in Biology or related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and skill using MAC or PC programs, including Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Good interpersonal communication skills including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility with students, staff, faculty, and visitors of various cultures and backgrounds.
  • Proven ability and organizational skills to keep accurate records of scientific data in a well-organized lab notebook.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be willing and able to work with fish as a primary research subject.
  • Must be able to lift and handle aquaculture equipment.
  • Must be able to work safely with lab chemicals.
  • Background checks and clearances required prior to employment.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $51,949 - $61,972 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $24.88 - $29.68

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
