Job Description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Applied Mathematics and Computational Research Division has an opening for a Computational Research Scientist to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will lead the development of cutting-edge mathematical algorithms and HPC software for analyzing experimental tomography and X-ray scattering data, as part of the Center for Advanced Mathematics for Energy Research Applications (CAMERA). This work involves research and development in combining advances in nonuniform Fourier analysis, optimization, and statistical regression to solve inverse problems from noisy and incomplete experimental data, accurately simulate complex nonlinear scattering experiments, and extract other forms of information from experimental X-ray images. Here, you will work closely with mathematicians, software engineers, physicists, materials scientists, and beamline scientists to implement these new tools on GPUs and DOE supercomputer architectures and deliver them as user-friendly software to meet DOE experimental facility needs. Additionally, you will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of CAMERA’s compute clusters.

What You Will Do:

  • Publish work in academic journals and present at conferences and workshops.
  • Lead the development of advanced mathematical algorithms for analyzing experimental tomography and X-ray scattering data.
  • Maintain and support developed software and provide training/tutorials on how to use it.
  • Develop high-performance GPU code for accurately simulating X-ray scattering from complex samples and experimental geometries, including dynamical scattering effects.
  • Provide hardware and software maintenance for local compute clusters.
  • Implement scalable fully 3D Mixed-Scale Dense networks that optimally leverage GPU resources and apply it to analyze experimental X-ray images and accelerate optimization processes.
  • Create fast algorithms and software that leverage GPUs and nonuniform fast Fourier transforms to accelerate model-based iterative tomographic reconstructions.
  • Collaborate with mathematicians, software engineers, material scientists, and beamline experimentalists to deploy the above data-analysis codes as user-friendly software that meets the needs of DOE experimental facilities.
  • Supervise graduate students and postdocs.

What is Required:

  • Demonstrated experience in advanced Fourier analysis and nonuniform Fast Fourier transforms.
  • Experience in writing research/funding proposals.
  • Requires a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related fields.
  • 15+ years of experience in scientific software development in C/C++, CUDA, and Python.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and to contribute to large collaborative projects within a diverse group.
  • Experience in developing scalable GPU implementations of fully 3D Mixed-Scale Dense networks for experimental image analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop high-performance GPU code on local clusters and DOE supercomputers.
  • Deep knowledge of dynamical scattering theory, the distorted-wave Born approximation, and multi-slice algorithms.
  • Extensive experience in collaborating with beamline scientists on analyzing experimental X-ray tomography and grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering data.
  • Demonstrated capability in leading research projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare research results for publication and presentation at seminars and scientific meetings.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in maintaining large compute clusters.
  • Experience with Docker and Jupyter notebooks.

  • This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • Work will be performed on-site. The primary location for this role is Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work must be performed within the United States.
  • This full salary range of this position is between $8,772 to $21,052 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $11,696 to $16,374 per month depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
