Job Purpose:
If you driven to make a difference with your data governance skills and can understand complex systems and processes and develop sustainable solutions while engaging data users, the Sr. Data Governance Specialist role is for you! Caterpillar’s Global Finance Organization is creating and implementing a data governance framework to manage the way we collect, use, and share data throughout the organization. This position initiates, develops and facilitates data management for master data or other systems data that require high quality standards. This position will provide consultation to others that provide data to the system or to those who consume data from the system as well as a change management component to drive new systems and encode new processes in the organization. The overall goal is to ensure the data quality meets the expectations needed for the business and that the data is governed and managed to meet brand, legal, information security, and document retention standards.
:
Create and manage with business partners data governance standards and processes for critical data elements for both master and transactional data. Create documentation for standards and processes and drive the cultural change through the organization. Be an expert with master data management tools and industry practices and have knowledge of how to incorporate advanced analytics into data quality and data management.
Job duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Define roles and responsibilities related to data governance and ensure clear accountability for stewardship of the company’s principal information assets
- Facilitate the development and implementation of data quality standards, data protection standards and adoption requirements across the enterprise including metrics, remediation processes, and guidelines
- Develop & maintain inventory of the enterprise information maps, including authoritative systems, owners
- Roll out a Global Finance wide data governance framework, with a focus on improvement of data quality and the protection of sensitive data through modifications to organization behavior policies and standards, principles, governance metrics, processes, related tools and data architecture in line with enterprise practices
- Define indicators of performance and quality metrics and ensure compliance with data related policies, standards, roles and responsibilities, and adoption requirements
- Document processes for resolving data discrepancy issues or for quality requirements
- Lead teams comprising resources from the Business and Functional areas and IT business and operations functions, to achieve their objectives; resolve issues escalated from Business and Functional areas data governance representatives
- Serve as a liaison between Business and Functional areas and technology to ensure that data related business requirements for protecting sensitive data are clearly defined, communicated and well understood and considered as part of operational prioritization and planning
- Work at an enterprise level of interaction with responsibilities of providing data to multiple consuming systems where the actions taken must be very well defined to not impact revenue generating business activities or manage data volumes at extremely high levels where the process and quality are more complex due to the nature of the volume or data.
- Closely interact with the business and provide master data subject matter expert input to various project teams as it relates to master data management and governance.
- Establish and govern a Global Finance data governance implementation roadmap including strategic priorities for development of information-based capabilities
- Identify new business opportunities pertaining to the use of information assets to achieve efficiency and effectiveness; represent data as a strategic business asset
- Provide consultation on use of data from other groups with reports or applications or other accesses.
- Create and manage contact lists for all source and consuming systems to address data discrepancy or data governance needs.
Basic Qualifications:
- This position should have had eight years of data management experience or other equivalent job experiences.
- The position requires a college or university degree or equivalent experience.
- Background would include working experience with Query writing and other analytical tools. Full Office Product knowledge is required.
- Change management skills are required to develop a cooperative work environment with others inside and outside the department along with strong written and spoken communication skills with a variety of audiences.

- This individual should be able to motivate and develop others to create an effective team for achieving positive business outcomes.
- The work environment requires an individual to be well organized and self-driven to determine the appropriate approach to the data needs for each of the requests.
- Analytical and decision-making skills to evaluate the impact on multiple other systems when data changes are made. The individual should have solid process management skills to understand the incoming data feeds and requests and the consuming users and applications to evaluate changes.
- Having Deployed a Data Governance Program
- This individual will require composure to resolve conflicts for achieving something quickly versus insuring system stability for the enterprise.
