Job Description
Purpose


How does the position contribute to the success of the operation, division and company?


The Shipping Manager oversees the daily shipping operations within the facility. They are responsible for tracking orders, managing shipping documents, directing material flow, and ensuring timely delivery of complete orders. The Shipping Manager is responsible for using software to track, check, prioritize, and route orders. Additionally, they oversee the entire process of material loading for shipment, inspecting completed loads, supervise staff, control the shipping department’s budget, collaborate with other managers, resolve order-related issues, ensure compliance with regulations and company policies, and report activities and issues to management.

Leadership Duties


  • Partner with Human Resources on all company policies, procedures, and employee relations situations.
  • Balance available resources with areas of need to ensure tasks are completed on time and at the lowest cost.
  • Provide direct reports with regular, objective, and constructive feedback regarding performance and expectations.
  • Responsible for all areas of personnel management including hiring, training, mentoring, developing, performing regular performance appraisals, coaching, developing corrective action plans, and terminations.
  • Keep the appropriate chain of command informed of the overall performance of direct reports, issues potentially requiring disciplinary action, and any potential need for staffing adjustments.
  • Fill in for absent team members during paid time off and leaves of absence when necessary.
  • Train, guide and evaluate new shipping team members.
  • Timesheet and PTO Management
  • Supervising shipping staff and daily activities.
  • Provide support and training which enables all inventory movements to be processed in an accurate and timely fashion.
  • Work Scheduling to ensure adequate team coverage.


Shipping Coordination


  • Maintain and monitor department KPIs and metrics. Perform root cause analysis and administer corrective actions to ensure targets are consistently achieved.
  • Actively lead continuous improvement projects utilizing lean techniques to eliminate waste.
  • Drive a Zero-Incident Work Environment by ensuring all activities are performed safely.
  • Ownership of overall Dept Performance including On time delivery and Load accuracy
  • Establish and maintain warehouse standards and procedures.
  • Obtain and remain current on certifications and training as required or assigned.
  • Expedite rush/hot orders to maintain on time delivery.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Communicating and coordinating load schedules with transportation, production, and sales teams.
  • Performing a daily inspection of area. Observe health and safety regulations; maintain area in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
  • Maintaining records, reporting relevant information, and preparing any necessary documentation.
  • Must have ability to work well with a wide variety of individuals both internal and external to Woodgrain Millwork.
  • Execute safe and accurate: picking and put away, stock consolidation, product identification and tagging, staging, unloading/loading of shipments, and routine maintenance and housekeeping.

  • Managing, evaluating, and reporting on Shipping productivity.
  • Initiate, oversee, and actively engage in continuous improvement projects aimed at reducing costs and increasing profitability, such as: improving safety, economy of movement, point of use, product rotation, space utilization, transaction accuracy, damage reduction, resource optimization, facility cleanliness, etc.
  • Ensure all material handling equipment is kept in good repair, unsafe equipment is removed from operation, and proper maintenance is completed when necessary.
  • Ensure proper processing of all inventory movement transactions within SAP data management.

What skills/certification/education must the individual have/maintain/gain? Include any degrees, certifications, and licenses required.


Education / Experience/Certification


  • 5 years of experience in material handling, logistics, and/or shipping/receiving
  • Ability to execute action plans.
  • Highest level of professional conduct and integrity.
  • Well-developed understanding of how to utilize an ERP system for the administration of shipping functions.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to positively influence others.
  • Proven ability to work in teams.
  • SAP experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in office computer applications.
  • Experience in Lean Manufacturing is preferred.
  • Successful experience supervising and developing others.
  • A four-year degree in industrial engineering, supply chain, operations management, or related field preferred.
  • Excellent servant leadership skills.


Supervisory Responsibilities


The Shipping Manager must have the ability to guide and direct each team member to keep all staff & equipment operating as safely and productively as possible.


Physical Demands and Work Environment


What working conditions or physical functions are normally required to perform the essential functions of the job?


This person is expected to perform work in the manufacturing floor/environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.


This is a full-time position. This position occasionally requires long hours and occasional weekend work.
