Description

Position Summary:

The purpose of this position is to assist in the developing, organizing, promoting and leading diverse age-appropriate recreational activities across a broad spectrum of programs for ages 18 months to 17 years old.

Position Scope:

This is an intermediate level support position.


Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties

This is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent may be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

  • Develops camp program plans – games, field trips, arts and crafts and special events in consultation with the camp counselors.
  • If required, perform light maintenance, i.e. garbage disposal or cleaning up.
  • Maintains positive rapport and relationships with many diverse groups, including staff, parents, volunteers, and administration.
  • Plan and supervise the camp program for the City of Sunny Isles Beach; ensures that activities and programs are carried out according to the curriculum development.
  • Enforce all directives, policies, and procedures.
  • Recommends and assists with implementation of new activities to improve and/or enhance program effectiveness.
  • Monitors activities in both indoor and outdoor spaces for safety and security and intervenes if needed.
  • Evaluate camp counselors and develops improvement plans when necessary.
  • Ensures participants and members are aware and comply with all codes of conduct, policies, and procedures.
  • Assists in organizing, promoting, and directing the activities of an assigned recreation center, playground, park, or community center for groups ages 18 months to 17 years old.
  • Assist with developing and implementing crisis and risk management procedures.
  • Assist with the marketing and promotion of the camp program.
  • Establish work schedules for camp counselors.
  • Participates in the recruitment process for camp and program staff.
  • Ensure daily assignments, routines, schedules, or tasks are being followed by direct reports.
  • Coaches, mentors, instructs, and oversees the positive interaction, growth, and development of participants as they engage in various recreation programs.
  • Administers CPR and first aid as needed.
  • Maintains accurate attendance records of assigned programs.
  • Performs any other related job duties as assigned.
  • Meets weekly with program staff and provides feedback and mentoring towards improved performance.
  • Reports orally, or in writing, all activities, repairs, incidents, and accidents, to the Youth and Teen Coordinator and/or Recreation Manager and/or designees within the required timeframe.
  • Cares for hygienic requirements of children as needed.
  • Ensure staff have all appropriate equipment, supplies, information, records, reports, and handouts to conduct activities or lessons. Maintains program equipment and supply inventory.
  • Maintains healthy group dynamics and facilitates problem-solving and collaboration between direct reports, colleagues, supervisors, and participants and their families.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Skill in written and oral communication.
  • Ability to be creative with activities for the children.
  • Ability to accurately issue and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Knowledge of safety precautions and basic first aid procedures
  • Knowledge of the principles, rules, and equipment required for standard but diversified recreational activities
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships while being friendly and courteous with children, adults, and coworkers.
  • Ability to assist in planning, supervising, directing, and coordinating the work of assigned personnel to promote efficient operation of programs, and to train such personnel.
  • Ability to work flexible schedule on weekdays, weekday evenings, weekends, and City sponsored events. Will also work various day camp programs including days off from school, winter break, spring break, and summer camps.
  • Able to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to appropriately budget, plan, and efficiently manage City resources.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with children, preferably in a summer camp or recreation program environment.

License and/or Certifications:

  • Child Care 40-hour training through DCF certification required within sixty (60) days of hire.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Pediatric First Aid certification within three (3) months of hire.

Additional Information:

  • There is a one-year probationary period.
  • This position is scheduled to work nights, weekends and holidays.
  • It is the responsibility of the incumbent to maintain their licenses and/or certifications as a job requirement.
