This position is for one Roadway Maintenance Tech I or II. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level based on the applicant’s work experience, education skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business need.
Salary Plan/Grade:
- (Roadway Maintenance)/General Transportation Tech I: A14 ($43,200.00 – $49,134.00/yearly), Minimum Salary: $3,600.00/monthly or $20.77/hourly
- (Roadway Maintenance)/General Transportation Tech II: A15 ($45,600.00 – $52,045.00/yearly), Minimum Salary: $3,800.00/monthly or $21.92/hourly

General Transportation Tech I or II:
Performs transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: construction, contract maintenance, and material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities.
Essential Duties:
The essential duties for General Transportation Tech I include:
- Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses equipment and tools, materials and products related to these activities.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires you to drive for TxDOT.
- Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
- Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
- Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
In addition to the above, essential duties for General Transportation Tech II include:
- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
- Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
- Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
- Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
- Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
- Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires you to drive for TxDOT.
- Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
- Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.

Experience:
This job requires the following for Gen Transp Tech I:
- None in work experience
This job requires the following for Gen Transp Tech II:
- 1 year transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience
For All Levels:

- No supervisory experience required
- Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent
Licenses and Certifications for Gen Transp Tech I and II:
- Valid Commercial Class "A" Driver's License at time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must obtain the "N" tanker endorsement within 120 calendar days of hire.

- Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
- Using basic mathematical fundamentals
- Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade
- Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations
- Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
- Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions for a Gen Transp Tech I and II:
- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
- Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature change
- Standing-prolonged periods of time
- Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
- Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
