Job Description
  • Establishes and maintains high standards of safety, cleanliness, and good housekeeping practices in all facilities and grounds areas.
  • Environment: Works outside with consideration of weather, event schedule and facility upkeep; works inside without air conditioning; works on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; maintains facilities in preparation for scheduled events, and during scheduled events; may work alone; requires occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours.
  • NO positive drug or alcohol tests including pre-employment, random, post-accident or reasonable suspicion.
  • Requests the appropriate materials and equipment for cleaning a wide variety of floors, walls, and other surfaces.
  • Maintains a routine work schedule for regular and special cleaning, including intermittent clean ups after each athletic competition / full clean-up at the end of season; ensures that facilities are unlocked or secured when necessary.
  • Knowledge of NFPA Fire and Life Safety Codes, Uniform Building Codes, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, and Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) codes.
  • Knowledge of landscaping, specialized landscape equipment, and surface preparation.
  • NO operating a vehicle without owner’s permission (unauthorized use or grand theft).
  • Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • None.
  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office and maintenance equipment, including computer and peripherals; uses hands for fine manipulation, handles or feels and reaches with hands and arms; some assembly of equipment may be required.
  • Attends scheduled Facilities, Custodial and District meetings as required.
  • Ensures the safe and efficient operation of equipment; operates, services, adjusts, and makes minor repairs to all necessary custodial/landscaping equipment assigned to the facility.
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; frequent reaching; frequent walking for long periods of time; climbing stairs and bleachers.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems in facility and grounds operation.
  • Demonstrates high quality customer service; builds rapport/relationship with the consumer.
  • Operates equipment to mow, edge, trim, and weed grounds using designated equipment; secures equipment not being used.
  • Receives, checks, and disburses custodial and facility supplies and equipment; stores equipment supplies; maintains an inventory and related records as required (daily work activities).
  • Education:
    • Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency required;
    • Additional coursework in related subjects preferred.
  • Knowledge of various types of floor surfaces and coverings, as well as their appropriate cleaning, polishing, and protective agents.
  • Knowledge of safe and efficient operation of low-pressure and other heating equipment, ventilating and air conditioning systems, and other building equipment.
  • Knowledge of preparation and upkeep of competition surfaces (e.g., courts, artificial turf, grass).
  • Ability to use tools, landscape equipment, and machinery, read athletic book, measure and lay out field markings, and operate time clock scoreboards.
  • Works a flex schedule to maintain the appropriate operation of the facilities during events.
  • Skill in interpersonal relationships, including using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Ability to make minor repairs to facilities and equipment.
  • Participates in the removal of weeds and debris from paved and unplanted areas and fence lines.
  • Ability to read and understand procedure manuals, operating manuals, assembly instructions, safety precautions, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), work orders, and instructions from superiors.
  • Performs all job-related duties as assigned and in accordance to the Board rules, policies and regulations. All employees are expected to comply with lawful directives in rare situations driven by need where a team effort is required.
  • Equipment violations.
  • Clear and valid Texas Driver's License;
  • Confers with Facilities Manager or Event Supervisor in regard to the utilization of facilities and equipment, site security, special programs and activities, and animal regulations.
  • NO use of a vehicle in commission of a felony.
  • Exhibits high professionalism, standards of conduct and work ethic.
  • Ability to work at various heights.
  • Supervises supplemental staff and participates in custodial work in cleaning offices, conference rooms, coaches/press box, pools, decks, restrooms, aisles, walks, stairways, athletic competition areas, walls, and fixtures.
  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
  • Certification/License:
    • Clear and valid Texas Driver's License;
    • Insurable by the District's insurance carrier.
  • Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
  • NO permitting an unlicensed person to drive.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude and work harmoniously with a team, district personnel and the public.
  • Ability to use and care for operations equipment.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  • NO leaving scene of an accident (bodily injury or physical damage).
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and proactively resolve issues.
  • Ability to recognize maintenance needs and initiate appropriate action.
  • Monitors watering lawns, shrubs, and trees involving the operation of manual or automatic irrigation systems in accordance with instructions from Facilities Manager, Maintenance, or Operations, as well as compliance with city regulations.
  • External applicants must have equivalent experience.
  • Additional restrictions may apply if directed by FWISD’s Fleet Insurance Carrier.
  • Maintains records of shutoff valves and utility cutoffs, including fire sprinkler systems; checks and operates fire extinguishers.
  • All Fort Worth ISD employees must maintain a commitment to the District’s mission, vision, and strategic goals.
  • NO reckless driving, speed contests, drag racing, or highway racing.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures that equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Experience in school operations is preferred;
  • Knowledge of proper use of tools of the trade.
  • Skill in coordinating, planning, organizing, leading and completing projects.
  • NO history of a conviction in a commercial or personal motor vehicle.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms.
  • Additional coursework in related subjects preferred.
  • Ensures the facilities are properly secured during and after working hours, including facility gates.
  • Knowledge of methods and materials used in minor maintenance of facilities and equipment.
  • Additional Requirement: Verified successful completion of Maintenance and Operations training on Custodial, Supervising, and Scheduling Practices.
  • NO speeding more than 20 mph over the posted speed limit.
  • Ability to work a flex schedule.
  • Sweeps, polishes, mops, dusts, dresses, and vacuums floors; cleans glass; disinfects floors and surfaces.
  • NO more than 2 violations during previous 36 months including:
    • moving traffic violations (including no more than 1 preventable accident);
    • failure to provide proof of valid driver’s license or proof of insurance;
    • equipment violations.
  • Follows expected guidelines for time and attendance (automated system/time cards).
  • Knowledge of fire and safety ordinances and regulations affecting facilities.
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
  • Knowledge of pollution control regulations.
  • 5 years’ in janitorial, custodial, or building maintenance work required;
  • NO Driving Under the Influence (DUI) for drug or alcohol.
  • Knowledge of principles, materials, and methods of custodial work.
  • NO vehicular assault, manslaughter, or homicide.
  • Moving traffic violations (including no more than 1 preventable accident);
  • Experience:
    • 5 years’ in janitorial, custodial, or building maintenance work required;
    • Experience in school operations is preferred;
    • External applicants must have equivalent experience.
  • Maintains records and submits documentation to Facilities Manager on facility security, vandalism, thefts, emergencies, supply needs, use of facilities, and related matters.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to use software to access databases, status work orders, and do email.
  • Demonstrates cultural competence in interactions with others; is respectful of co-workers; communicates and acts as a team player; promotes teamwork; responds and acts appropriately in confrontational situations.
  • NO operating a vehicle with suspended or revoked driver’s license.
  • Insurable by the District's insurance carrier.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Failure to provide proof of valid driver’s license or proof of insurance;
  • Lifting: Continuous lifting and carrying (less than 60 pounds) of supplies, tools, and equipment for an average distance of 100 feet; occasional lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds and frequently lifts in excess of 50 pounds of force, sometimes with a helper.
  • Inspects facility equipment, determines the need for and recommends corrective action, and/or work orders; coordinates maintenance and repairs to custodial standard of non-hazardous conditions; works with the facility manager or site administrator.
  • Driving and accident record:
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
  • Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency required;
  • Participates in moving/securing audio-visual and other equipment within the facility as authorized by Facilities Manager, site administrator, and/or Area Supervisor.
