We have an open position for a Research Technician to support laboratory operations in the Biosciences Center at NREL. The Biosciences Center works to understand the function and design principles of biological systems that capture and convert energy to develop transformative technologies to produce advanced biofuels, biochemicals, bioproducts, and biomaterials.
This position will report directly to the Group Manager for Microbiology and Biochemistry but will support lab operations in multiple Centers and Groups and is encouraged to correspond and interact directly with research staff.
The main role of this position is cleaning glassware and other laboratory supplies for multiple microbiology labs in the Field Test Laboratory Building. Glassware and other materials are both common use and specialized by lab and tracking and returning these materials to their correct location is essential to efficient operations. Improper cleaning or sterilization can result in failed experiments and wasted time and effort. Specific responsibilities related to this include:
  • Assisting in maintaining organized lab spaces
  • Drying materials in a drying oven
  • Quality control for cleanliness
  • Communicating with research staff in person and electronically to coordinate glassware and other lab supply needs
  • Sterilizing and disposing of biowaste
  • Prepare microbiological media and buffers
  • Ordering and stocking lab supplies and keeping track of charge #s used
  • Coordinate routine maintenance and repair of general laboratory equipment
  • Washing by hand for certain materials
  • Maintaining high cleaning standards of laboratories and equipment
  • Collecting dirty glassware from multiple labs
  • Sterilizing culture glassware
  • Returning materials to their correct location
  • Coordinate collection and scheduling disposal of non-hazardous chemical waste
  • Washing most glassware in specialized dishwashers

Basic Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope or equivalent relevant education/experience. Basic knowledge of the job. Moderate understanding of general job aspects, and some understanding of the detailed aspects of the job. Basic knowledge of research techniques and practices. Basic communication, team and interpersonal skills.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Basic experience working in biological research laboratory.
  • Capable of supporting multiple research projects with attention to detail and ability to multi-task
  • Capable of taking initiative, high standards of cleanliness, and being very well-organized.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Moderate experience in handling glassware and operation of industry-scale dishwashers, general sterilization.
  • Biosafety Level 1 and 2 operations
  • Familiarity with sterile techniques.
  • Procedures and operation of autoclaves.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS) in molecular biology, biochemistry, engineering, or related field

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Research Technician I / Annual Salary Range: $41,600 - $66,600
Job Profile: Research Technician II / Annual Salary Range: $47,800 - $76,500
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
