Job Summary
In the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, we research and teach how the collective behavior of molecules and cells forms the basis of life. The Lichtman Lab is seeking a Reasearch Lab Manager. The Research Lab Manager is responsible for supervising and performing technical and research tasks on a day-to-day basis to ensure the operational needs of the laboratory research group are being met. This position oversees the ordering and acquisition of a large number of scientific laboratory research supplies, computers, equipment, and office supplies to support research project needs. The person in this position also ensures adherence to Harvard's safety and lab research protocols.
Position Description
Laboratory and Facilities Operations
- Maintain mouse colonies, including breeding and genotypying
- Oversees the ordering and stocking of laboratory supplies
- Responsible for ensuring al chemical and hazardous waste is prepared for proper removal by the appropriate party in compliance with Harvard’s Environmental Health and Safety policies
- Oversees maintenance, service contracts, repair, tagging, tracking and disposal of laboratory equipment
- Processes and organizes shipping and receiving; processes maintenance work requests for the laboratory
- Oversees safety trainings, and ensures compliance with safety regulations and emergency protocols; ensures PPE supply needs are met
Administration/Personnel Management and Support
- Provides guidance related to implementation and adherence of lab safety protocols to lab members, undergraduate students, and interns that work in the lab
- Develops and delivers new research lab employee onboarding plan; trains laboratory members in proper lab conduct
Financial Management
- Devises and implements standard operating procedures for the lab; ensuring compliance with policies, procedures and optimization of supply inventory and resources across the lab; provides routine reporting to the PI
- Identifies and resolves issues that arise including effort reporting, reviews memoranda from RPM for accuracy
- Collaborates with sponsored research administrator on grants administration, including resource allocation, preparation of applications, budgets, and progress reports
- Monitors operational expenses; prepares and processes financial transactions related to research, including specialized orders and internal billing; negotiates prices and obtains competitive cost quotes with vendors and related record keeping, including credit card payments, payment requests, reimbursements, and purchase orders
Faculty Support
- Establishes lab policies and procedures; acts as liaison with the finance department and lab members on behalf of the PI; assist with monitoring follow-up actions on correspondence and inquiries
- Serves as main point of contact for any laboratory emergencies
Basic Qualifications
- Three or more years of laboratory experience including at least one year of supervisory experience
- Bachelor’s degree in health or physical sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- PC experience
- Ability to initiate and compose communications for various purposes in an appropriate style
- Federal grant and contract management experience
- Advanced degree, Masters or Ph.D., preferred
- Ability to review goal, analyze processes necessary to achieve those goals, and develop techniques and systems required to meet those goals
- Ability to develop instructional material for routine training purposes
- Ability to supervise others
- Excellent time management, organizational, problem solving, and analytical skills
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
