Assistant Research Scientist - Microbiology And Immunology (Ellermeier Lab)

The Carver College of Medicine Department of Microbiology and Immunology (Dr. Ellermeier lab) is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist. This Assistant Research Scientist position will focus on how Gram-position pathogens sense and respond to antibiotics and the innate immune system. Research is primarily focused on the opportunistic human pathogen Clostridioides difficile.

Position Responsibilities

• Evaluate data to establish relevance to the problem or problems being evaluated.
• Assist with development of new research proposals and obtain support for new and/or continuing research activities.
• Present data and progress at lab meetings.
• Develop new methods in the laboratory and instruct others how to use these methods.
• Contribute to publications by writing, organizing data, and preparing images or figures with the Principal Investigator.
• Perform experiments and collect data.
• Prepare seminars, talks, lectures, and the like for dissemination of knowledge, particularly the results of projects undertaken.
• Train graduate students, junior postdoctoral fellows and support personnel, and conduct continuing education for research personnel at all levels in collaboration with the Principal Investigator.
• Perform research on specified topics for use in experimentation and grant writing.
• Maintain and update protocols for the laboratory.
• Effectively communicate progress and problems with Principal Investigator.
• Assist in the analysis and interpretation of experiments.
• Mentor undergraduate and research staff on day-to-day laboratory protocols as well as presentations, writing and poster presentations.
• Attend Joint meetings with other labs to discuss research findings.
• As appropriate, manage the conduct of all or part of a research project, including coordination of data generation, analysis, and identification, as well as acquisition and use of equipment and facilities.

Required Qualifications

• Experience with fluorescence microscopy
• Use of Python to analyze large data sets.
• Working experience with each of the following:
• Use and maintenance of anaerobic chamber.
• Use of High-throughput screening methods to identify potential antibiotics or antibiotic targets
• Experience with complex bacterial strain construction.
• Ability to effectively communicate with Principal Investigator.
• Recombinant protein purification.
• Extensive proficiency with each of the following:
• Development of assays to define antibiotic targets.
• Western blotting
• A minimum of 2 - 3 years of postdoctoral research experience in advanced studies of microbiology, molecular biology, or biochemistry.
• Ability to prioritize projects according to deadlines.
• Working experience with each of the following:
• Requires a Ph.D. in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or equivalent professional degree
• Molecular biology, including PCR, cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, and advanced techniques to evaluate gene expression
• Ability to collaborate in a group environment.
• Mutant or overexpression library construction.

Desirable Qualifications

• Experience with writing NIH grants.
• Working experience with following:
• Experience managing research staff.
• Basic bioinformatics including the use of online databases and resources.
