Job Description

Job Summary

Harvard Graduate School of Education, Project Zero is seeking a Research Assistant II for a study involving the effects of a set of innovative lesson plans on pedagogical practices and student outcomes. This three-year research initiative will analyze the experiences of teachers and students working with materials focused on virtues development related to the achievement of “good work” that is excellent, engaging, and ethical. At a time when the world of work is changing rapidly, the curriculum central to this study provides adolescents with strategies to navigate complexity and situational dilemmas.
The mixed-methods research will work with a diverse group of teachers within and outside of the United States. Educators and their students will complete surveys and focus groups, as well as share materials with the research team for analysis. Adaptations to the curriculum will be made accordingly, which we will then attempt to further scale via a community of practice model. Overall, the project aims to create a community of practitioners who will help build a strong, scalable character program.

Position Description

Duties & Responsibilities:
Major responsibilities of this position will include complex administrative support of study activities, including synthesis of background research; participation in and notetaking at team meetings; ensuring follow-up on action items; and participation in collection and analysis of data, including storage of confidential records. Responsibilities will also include analysis of data according to a co-developed coding scheme; communication with partner schools and teachers and maintenance of a contact database; contribution to writing projects related to the research; assistance with recruitment to the community of practice; scheduling of meetings and interviews; and distribution of surveys and study instruments to participants. This individual will serve as an active member of the research team’s activities and communication efforts. Other miscellaneous tasks related to the project will be assigned as needed.

This position is a term appointment for one year from the date of hire, with likelihood of continuation.

Bachelor's degree, preferably in education or a related field is strongly preferred as is knowledge of the field of education. Experience in a research setting (as an intern, student assistant, research assistant, or similar position). Knowledge of the larger social science context and literature a plus. Demonstrated writing ability; ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team; ability to meet deadlines; and a strong academic and organizational abilities.
