Historic New England, the oldest and largest regional heritage organization in the nation, is seeking applicants for a part-time research fellow to conduct academic research in support of our goal to become the premier organization where new areas of research, stories, interpretation, and programming are discovered and shared with today’s audiences.
Classification: Part-time; 20 hours per week; Non-exempt; Term-limited 9 months; September 11, 2023 start
Location: Eustis Estate, Milton, Massachusetts with partial remote work
Opportunity Summary:
The research fellow is a nine-month, term-limited, research-based position available to scholars in the humanities, social sciences, and other related fields. Under the supervision of the Study Center manager, the research fellow will work independently to research a topic related to the Eustis Estate supporting the interpretation of architecture, landscape, decorative arts, or social history at Historic New England, with the goal of completing a predetermined research product.
This is a post-master’s degree position in a uniquely interdisciplinary setting with the opportunity to work cross-team with Historic New England staff in areas of material culture, archives, preservation, architectural history, and visitor experience.
The research fellowship for the 2023-24 academic year is:
History of Technology: The Eustis Estate has many technological features that were considered innovative and cutting edge in the late 19th and early 20th These include wind-generated electricity, on-site generation of gas for lighting, and new approaches for plumbing and irrigation. This fellowship is dedicated to deepening and expanding our knowledge and understanding of some of these innovations and contextualizing them within the larger developments in science, technology, and domestic use at the time.
This fellowship is open to scholars at all levels who hold at least a master’s degree. Ideal candidates are those who will use this opportunity for growth in their career and educational endeavors.

Key Roles and Responsibilities: The term-limited Research Fellow is responsible for the following primary functions and other duties as assigned:
- Transition the research results into accessible articles, essays, online enhancements, or other product for the general public to enrich the visitor experience at the Eustis Estate and Historic New England
- Conduct primary and secondary research on the research topic towards the goal of completing of a research paper, report, public program, or other product
Skills and Qualifications:
- A completed master’s degree, or expected completion before the fellowship begins, in fields related to the fellowship topic
- Valid driver’s license, means of transportation, and ability to travel to Historic New England sites, as well as any libraries, archives, and research facilities as needed
- Commitment to the values of diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion
- The ability to disseminate the products of the fellowship in both the academic and public realms
- Verification of full COVID-19 vaccination status or exemption approved by Historic New England prior to the start date of employment
- New England residency required
Salary: $23.00 hourly
