Job Duties
As a key member of the curatorial staff, this position is responsible for leading the scholarship and interpretation of Indigenous history and culture at the Jamestown Settlement museum and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. This position will have responsibilities for historical research, collections development, NAGRPA compliance within the collection, advising on historical content, providing staff training, and disseminating this history to public and professional communities. This position supports the Director and work of the Foundation’s Indigenous Peoples Initiative and is committed to the stewardship of Indigenous history and cultural representation in our museums. The Curator of Indigenous History and Culture works as a colleague on a team of curators developing overall interpretation acknowledging multiple points of view.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of, by working experience or coursework, 17th century and 18th century
- Experience using material culture to interpret Indigenous history and culture
- Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, research and write articles and interpretive
- Experience in best museum practices including but not limited to collections management,
- Knowledge of provisions for Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act as it
- Ability to cultivate community relations with cultural groups
- Experience effectively working in groups involving multiple points of view
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
- Skilled at computer programs in a museum environment, including full Microsoft and
- Ability to meet multiple deliverables with exceptional attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated knowledge and application, either by experience or coursework, of American Studies, Archaeology, History, or a related field focusing on 17th and 18th-century Indigenous history that is applicable to Virginia and the legacies and presence of Indigenous culture today. Degree in history or related field preferred.
