Job Summary
Researchers from the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Environment at Auburn University are implementing a 4-year project to understand the impacts of historical management activities on biodiversity of Alabama wildlife and to inform future approaches to habitat management on state lands. As part of this project, we are seeking a research assistant who will assist with coordinating all field- and office-based aspects of the project. This is a 4-year limited term appointment funded by extramural funds. Continued employment is contingent on the availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

Essential Functions
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
  • Purchasing and maintaining field and lab equipment
  • Coordinate all aspects of data management, including developing data sheets and data entry, proofing, managing, and analysis
  • Acquiring and maintaining GIS databases
  • Participate in field-based sampling efforts for birds, mammals, and vegetation
  • Ensuring field vehicles are maintained
  • Organizing field sampling logistics including permits, vehicles, and field housing
  • Hiring and supervising field technicians
  • Tracking the budget
  • Disseminating project information in the form of reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and presentations

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Education and experience:
Level I: Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology, Natural Resources or closely related field and no experience.
Level II: Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology, Natural Resources or closely related field and 2 years experience.
Level III: Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology, Natural Resources or closely related field and 4 years experience, including at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent.
Level IV:Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology, Natural Resources or closely related field and 6 years experience, including at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent.

Substitutions allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

Note that while these skills and qualifications are desirable, previous experience in all of these areas is not required. Please do not self-select yourself out of applying, as there are many ways to be successful in this position and many different types of skills that will be useful.
  • Strong data management skills and experience using R, Github, GIS and remote sensing software
  • Experience presenting and publishing peer-reviewed research
  • Ability to navigate challenges associated with working outdoors in the southeastern United States (e.g., heat, humidity, biting insects, poison ivy)
  • Prior field experience conducting avian point counts, small mammal trapping, and vegetation sampling
  • MS degree in wildlife, biology, ecology, natural resources, forestry, or a closely related field from an accredited institution
  • Experience working with government agencies and other diverse stakeholder groups
