Research Assistant (50%) Jobs

The woman and child health biomarker lab (PI: Young-Eun Cho) in The University of Iowa College of Nursing is seeking a part-time Research Assistant. The Research Assistant will be involved in both clinical research and pre-clinical research in order to find the role of extracellular vesicle transcriptomes related to obesity and obesity-related complications. Multi-omics method approaches will be utilized with both human and animal samples. This position is Specified Term until June 2024.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Research

• Cell work (performing cultures, and transfections, etc.)
• Performing laboratory procedures
• Animal work (overseeing animal conditions, and conducting animal experiments-injection and blood collection, etc.)
• RNA/protein extraction and measurement from cells, animal tissues and human samples
• Western blotting, qPCR, ELISA, etc.

Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports

• Data organization
• Recording the experiment process and results
• Simple data acquisition using Excel.

Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations

• Consult lab set-up in the UI College of Nursing, if necessary.
• Performs inventory checks, stocks supplies, and maintains the laboratory.
• Logs the transfer and shipment of biological samples.
• Maintains a database of all accumulated laboratory samples.
• Assembles and dismantles standard laboratory equipment for experiments and instruction.
• Compiles with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements based on UI policies and procedures.
• Gather and determine specifications for the equipment in the lab.

Supervision/Staffing

• Develop training procedures and train undergraduate or graduate students who are interested in learning lab techniques for research.

Required Qualifications

• Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are required.
• Bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to life science or medical research or a related field or an equivalent combination of education with typically at least 1 year of previous experience.
• Knowledge of and ability to utilize tools and techniques for producing well-written, meaningful and usable documentation of research findings.
• Previous animal research experience is preferred: rodent colony maintenance, breeding, and handling
• Knowledge of practices, behaviors, applicable laws, rules, and regulations governing proper research conduct; ability to demonstrate ethical and compliant behavior in diverse situations.
• Demonstrated experience performing the lab experiments listed above.

Desirable Qualifications

• Statistical and Graphical Analysis of Data (SPSS, graphpad prism)
• Experience working in a clinical study
