Job Summary
In the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University, we research and teach how the collective behavior of molecules and cells forms the basis of life. We are driven by a passion for discovery and value collaborative approaches to scientific inquiry, where connections between people fuel interdisciplinary science and break boundaries across varied experimental systems. Against a backdrop of cutting-edge biological research, we work as a team of educators and mentors to inspire and train the next generation of scientists and global citizens. The Elya Lab, which focuses on molecular and genetic techniques to explore the mechanistic basis of parasite-induced behaviors in the fruit fly by the zombie fungus Entomophthora muscae, has an opening for Research Assistant I. This position will include technical support and experimental work for projects involving identifying fungal effectors (genes, cells, and molecules) of summiting behavior, developing new protocols to alter gene expression in E. muscae and establishing a robust workflow to measure oscillation of circadian gene expression and clock neuron activity in freely moving flies. The successful candidate will perform tasks related to the research project independently while under the guidance and mentorship of the supervisor.
Position Description
We are seeking a highly motivated individual to provide comprehensive technical support and experimental work for projects involving mechanistic underpinnings of manipulated behaviors in the fruit fly, fungal genetic engineering and circadian biology. The projects in our group will provide the opportunity to gain experience with multiple, interdisciplinary techniques, including fly behavioral assays, automated fly tracking, fungal cell culture, molecular cloning, genome editing, immunohistochemistry, fluorescent microscopy. As this work exists at the interface of molecular biology, genetics, microbiology and neuroscience, applicants with a diverse background in training and education will be considered. The primary responsibilities of this position are as follows:
- Perform experiments involving processing of samples for microscopic, molecular and/or chemical analysis
- Collect and record data from experiments; process, organize, and summarize data
- Perform experiments involving the collection of E. muscae flies at specific behavioral timepoints and collecting samples (blood, tissues) therefrom
- The successful candidate will perform tasks related to the research project independently while under the guidance and mentorship of the supervisor.
- Occasionally instruct others in basic laboratory techniques.
- Assist with experimental design, establishing new protocols, and setting up lab space and equipment.
- Perform standard cloning techniques including amplifying regions of genomic DNA, ligating into bacterial vectors and transforming into bacteria and fungi.
Basic Qualifications
College background or equivalent work experience, preferably in a related discipline.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- At least one year of laboratory research experience is strongly preferred.
- B.S./B.A. degree in biology, molecular biology, neuroscience, or a related field.
- Knowledge of basic computer technologies, including specific software applications such as Windows system, Google Drive suite, MATLAB, and Python.
- Basic knowledge of general laboratory practices and procedures is required.
- Strong interpersonal skills, in addition to the ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Must be self-motivated with excellent time-management, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Background training and knowledge of molecular biology, microbiology, behavior and/or neuroscience.
- Must be well-organized with attention to detail, both experimentally and with communication both written and oral.
Working Conditions
This position does not offer hybrid remote/in person work flexibility. There is an expectation that employees be able to work in person in Cambridge, MA.
The health of our workforce is a priority for Harvard University. With that in mind, we strongly encourage all employees to be up-to-date on CDC-recommended vaccines.
Additional Information
This is a one- year term position with possibility of extension contingent on funding.
In order to be considered for this position, a cover letter and resume must be submitted.
All formal written offers will be made by FAS HR.
We are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.
At the core of the MCB department is a commitment to foster an environment in which all individuals have the opportunity to thrive. It is our shared responsibility to create an inclusive culture, where we support and respect each other as colleagues.
