About the Position:

Utilizing independent judgment, this position manages all day to day aspects of the Purchasing Department. This is to include emphasis on competitive sourcing and cost competitive buying strategies, clear concise inter-department communications, and the overall effectiveness of the department. Acts on behalf of Vice President of Purchasing in his/her absence and must be able to make sound decisions. Will assist Vice President in the development of strategy and purchase of scrap, ferroalloys, energy and manage daily material flow and inventory levels.

What You’ll Do:

  • Negotiate, execute (with VP – Purchasing approval) and administrate contracts, where applicable for commodities purchased.
  • Meets attendance requirements.
  • Must have ability and desire to work with others.
  • Oversee strategy and manage daily execution of purchasing staff personnel to buy transportation, consumables, maintenance and steelmaking supplies at prices, quality and inventory levels consistent with optimal operating income.
  • Supports the Company philosophy concerning unions and works to maintain a union free environment through the utilization of good supervisory practices.
  • Ensures compliance with ISO 9001 within Purchasing Department.
  • Other projects as requested, including travel (local, national and international), if required.
  • Assures that department records are maintained and that purchases are followed up or expedited when required. Department records include price histories to provide information on price variances.
  • Develops and implements systematic purchasing department plan for competitive sourcing and annual review on all purchased items, including reporting cost reduction, cost avoidance and cost increases quarterly to Vice-President of Purchasing.
  • Assist with purchasing activities, as necessary.
  • Abides by all policies and procedures established by the Company including plant safety regulations and work rules
  • Recommends major purchases of materials based on anticipated changes in prices or on unusual availability situations.
  • Possesses a strong commitment to a safe work environment and practices and maintains adherence to Company Safety Policies through education and accountability.
  • Undertakes specifically assigned projects relating to procurement and provides summaries, reports and recommendations on these subjects.
  • Assists VP- Purchasing with scrap, ferroalloy and energy purchases as required. Handle day-to-day issues regarding material flow/inventory levels and daily interface with scrap inspectors and operations.
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary.
  • Makes certain that purchasing documents are properly completed and the terms and conditions of purchases are appropriate.
  • Provides sound recommendations for estimating input costs for raw materials consumables and steelmaking supplies into the annual Business Plan Budget.
  • Selects vendors, assesses vendor capabilities, develops alternate sources, and evaluates vendor performance, negotiates price and delivery.
  • Establish practices and procedures to be followed by buyers and other departments.

What You’ll Need:

EDUCATION: Bachelor of Science or Business Degree required.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years purchasing experience. Experience purchasing for a steelmaking facility would be a plus.

DRIVING: Required to have an active and valid driver’s license, or the ability to travel and commute as required, and comply with the Motor Vehicle Safety Program.

SKILLS NEEDED: Candidate must have strong integrity; Good communication skills, both oral and written; Background/ familiarity with scrap, alloy and commodities is helpful; Strong interpersonal and persuasive skills required; Proven record of cost cutting ability; Solid computer skills.
