Tourism Australia (TA) has an exciting opportunity for a Public Relations Specialist to join its team in Los Angeles.

This position is responsible for implementing consumer marketing activities as per Annual Operation plan (AOP) to deliver PR activities and general reporting as allocated and directed by PR Manager, The Americas.


Reporting directly to the PR Manager, The Americas, this position plays an integral role in supporting the development and implementation of effective and measurable publicity and advocacy programs that promote Australia as the most memorable and desirable destination on earth in the US and Canada.


Central to this role is the ability to implement public relations programs, manage media and consumer event launches, manage communications with numerous internal and external stakeholders, assist with project management and the development of marketing communications materials that support Tourism Australia’s public relations programs and marketing campaigns.

As Tourism Australia is a multinational organisation, this role may require the incumbent to be flexible in the hours worked and travel.


You will be responsible for delivering on the following:


  • Coordinate and administer Tourism Australia’s International Media Hosting Program plan for The Americas including working with State Tourism Organisations (STOs), airlines and other industry partners where appropriate and monitoring and clipping articles/blogs and recording results.
  • Creating articles about Tourism Australia’s public relations activities for placement in the organisation’s internal and external publications.
  • Provide administration, budget and reporting support for Americas team.
  • Coordinate media and industry event(s). This includes liasing with vendors, key stakeholders, PR Manager and agency to deliver
  • Preparing reports on PR activities, developments and initiatives.
  • Provide input into the development of social media posts and ensure relevant content / market monitoring.
  • Support the PR Manager in maintaining Tourism Australia’s media profile in-market including developing media relationships, managing the media database, responding to media inquiries in a timely manner, generating and distributing media materials, responding to media issues, monitoring and clipping media.
  • Collating material, product and content for online and offline publishing, for internal channels as well as to drive consumer awareness.
  • Support the delivery of all Tourism Australia government relations initiatives.
  • Support the execution of media visits and identify opportunities to leverage resulting coverage to promote Australia.
  • Provide coordination for public relations and assist managers to ensure all communication matters are aligned to regional PR strategies.
  • Assist PR Manager in maintaining and developing relationships with media, celebrities and key industry and government stakeholders.
  • Review invoices and assist with scanning and coding to ensure accuracy.


To excel in this role, you will have the following experience, knowledge and attributes:


  • Ability to think creatively to implement innovative ideas and solutions, while still maintaining a systematic and logical approach to achieving outcomes
  • Copy writing in press release and social content development
  • Australian Tourism Industry/Products/Markets
  • Use a systematic approach to solving problems that identifies cause and effect, and arrives at appropriate solutions
  • Work independently, show initiative and take full responsibility for completion of duties
  • Maintain up-to-date product knowledge
  • Take a flexible approach to all situations, changing behaviour, opinions or actions in light of new information, changing situations, unexpected obstacles or different goals.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office
  • Highly developed English language skills (reading/writing and oral/aural)
  • Deliver briefing documents that are detailed and error free
  • Manage multiple projects at one time
  • Build and maintain media contacts
  • Manage projects with strict budget and time constraints
  • Tertiary qualifications in Marketing and PR or other related field
  • Think creatively to implement innovative ideas and solutions, while still maintaining a systematic and logical approach to achieving outcomes.


Demonstrated experience in


  • PR and media relations
  • Familiarity with Excel spreadsheets and building PowerPoint presentations.
  • Familiarity with social media and digital marketing
  • Ability to meet deadlines and coordinate various projects simultaneously
  • Minimum 4+ years of experience in PR or communications
  • College degree, preferably in communications, marketing, or PR


Desired, but not essential experience in


  • Agency/supplier management
  • Government Relations
  • Travel and tourism-specific PR
  • Content Management System (CMS)
  • Event Management
  • General financial and budget management and business administration
