The Role
Where you fit in –
The Gulf of Mexico Projects & Technology Deepwater Projects organization is responsible for the delivery of subsea technology solutions for all major Deepwater Projects in the Americas region including the Gulf of Mexico and Brazil as well as in emerging basins. The Subsea projects group also supports the delivery of a number of projects in Trinidad and Tobago in support of Integrated Gas Business.
The Pipeline Project Engineer will report to a Subsea Project Manager in the Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Projects group. No line management of Shell staff is involved.
The successful applicant will be responsible for the design and delivery scope of Pipelines, Risers, subsea structures, subsea fiber optic cable installation, etc for various projects as applicable. The responsibility includes specification, selection, design, tendering, award, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning of these project scopes. Particular focus on personal and process safety leadership is critical to success in the role. The position offers the opportunity to grow into the leadership of progressively larger and/or more complex projects as delivery competence is demonstrated.
What’s the role –
The Pipeline Project Engineer is responsible for the delivery of the Subsea, Umbilical, Risers and Flowlines (SURF) scope for various projects within the responsibility of Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Projects organization. This includes:
- Engineering Procurement Construction and Installation (EPCI) Contract management of the subsea installation contracts for projects
- Manage and coordinate logistical aspects
- Coordinate technical Interface issues between disciplines
- Monitor and report project progress.
- Manage all marine assurance aspects with the Marine Assurance team.
- Lead or participate in the development of specifications and tender packages for the delivery (design, construction, and installation) of the subsea systems including procurement of long lead equipment
- Determine and take corrective action as necessary to ensure delivery to promise.
- Oversee the development and/or bridging of contractor HSE management systems and promote safety culture and practices with suppliers to ensure safe installation and operation of the relevant equipment and systems.
- Goal Zero/ Successful delivery, manage cost and schedule of the SURF scope through Front End Engineering and Design, detailed engineering, procurement, fabrication, transportation, installation and commissioning
Dimensions
- No line management of Shell staff is involved. However, coordination and prioritization of project technical activities, coordination of needs across multiple disciplines, and direct interfacing with operations staff and manufacturers are part of the job scope.
- The job emphasizes interactive participation with the other project participants balancing individual project goals and deliverables against the success of the overall project and portfolio.
- The Pipeline Project Engineer will report to the SURF Project Manager in the GoM Projects Deepwater Organization and work within the portfolio projects SURF delivery structure under the direction of the SURF PM.
What we need from you -
- Degree in Engineering with ten (10) years relevant experience in Upstream Deepwater/ Offshore Project Engineering and Management.
- A legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
Specific skills and experiences must include:
- A strong HSSE commitment and demonstrated HSE leadership skills are essential to performing in our project delivery environment.
- The ability to manage interfaces is critical.
- Manage the execution of the Project Assurance Plan and ensure that deliverables are executed on time.
- Applicants should have the ability to organize and carry out hands-on technical work, to assess the impact of regulatory and commercial aspects on project decisions and to generate ideas to optimize project commercial and technical decision-making.
- Prior pipelines design and installation experience.
- Manage all project execution activities, in compliance with the Project Execution Plan and Basis Design and Engineering Package agreed at Project’s Final Investment Decision.
- Strong in communications, influencing and leadership skills across a diverse team, interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills to develop trust and credibility among varied interfaces.
- Design and construction experience of pipeline shore approach including Horizontal Directional Drilling and onshore pipeline will be an advantage.

- Ability to quickly build strong relationships in multi-cultural environments.
NOTE: The role is based in Houston, with frequent international travel to contractor’s sites and offshore.
